Posting scan pictures of genitals on the Pregnancy board

There seems to have been a recent influx of threads with scan photos, asking if people want to have a look and guess the sex of the baby using 'nub theory' or some other obscure criteria.

Is it just me who finds this rather distasteful? I'd rather not show loads of strangers my unborn child's bits, let alone stare at someone else's.

AIBU?

They do ask, at the 20 week scan.

HetzelNatur · 06/05/2015 08:22

Yes ask the sonographer, exactly. Or wait to find out. Or stare at it in private (I can't say I've not done the same myself). But posting it on a vast public forum?

I don't know. It's hardly crime of the century but I find it unnecessary.

What does yanbu mean? I'm new Hmm

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 06/05/2015 08:27

I don't like showing anyone except close friends and family my scan pics, why would I want anyone to see the inside of my uterus?! Find it bizarre that people post them on Facebook etc.
I think YABU though, it's not something I would do but I don't think it's intrusive necessarily. Each to their own.

Snozberry · 06/05/2015 08:27

I do agree that it’s a bit silly and pointless, but it isn’t doing anyone any harm so if you find it uncomfortable then don’t look. It’s a forum where you can choose to click and join in if you wish, not like they’re waving their scan pictures at strangers on a bus and yelling where’s the penis.

rebelfor · 06/05/2015 08:27

I don't see the problem, to be honest. It's hardly perverse when the pictures are grainy black and white.

WilsonWilsonWoman · 06/05/2015 08:31

Nah, the really annoying ones are 'I had unprotected sex, do you think I am pregnant?' and 'I ate a bit of boursin, ham, fruit, stilton have I got listeria?' posts. Grooooannnn.

Welshmaenad · 06/05/2015 08:36

Used to get a lot of it on a fb group I used to use, usually with a caption that said "Any Guesses???!??!".

When I was feeling especially puckish I used to respond 'oooh, looks like a BABY!'.

Sallystyle · 06/05/2015 08:38

It's just a bit of fun FFS.

No different than people guessing the sex, weight and time of an upcoming baby's birth.

People like to make predictions and see if they are right.

If you see something wrong with that you have a funny way of looking at the world. No teen is going to care that mummy showed some people their nub when they were 11 weeks gestation.

I couldn 't care less what people choose to do with their scan pics, tbh. People waffling on about 'photos of the inside of my uterus' pearl-clutchers are utter imbeciles, sorry obv not sorry FFS it is a b/w grainy shot of a fetus, no one is looking at the soft furnishings around it Hmm

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 06/05/2015 08:57

People who passive aggressively cross things out rather than actually say them are utter imbeciles in my opinion elquinto.
Like I said, each to their own.

flowerygirl · 06/05/2015 09:01

Haha are people really offended by this? They're just a blob at 12 wks. It's a black and white fuzzy photo of undeveloped genitals. That's why it's called the nub theory.

Pregnancy is a tough time for a lot of women and if guessing the gender, weight, time of arrival of their baby gives them a bit of light relief then let them.

Depends if they ask 'any guesses girls'? If so then YANBU.

Personally I find the 'is it safe to eat ham/bread/curry/apples or dye my hair or carry my own super heavy feather pillow shite far more tedious and attention seeking. Especially when shown the NHS list and given factual reasons as to why there isn't a risk for X the OP will still come back with 'I'm avoiding it just in case'. Just is case of what???? And why ask then? Infuriating.

HetzelNatur · 06/05/2015 09:17

Gosh I never meant to imply it was perverse in any sense.

OP posts:
HetzelNatur · 06/05/2015 09:19

Nor do I hold any feelings of hatred towards those who post them. Their motives are always, I am certain, completely innocent and harmless.

It's just super irritating, that's all.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 06/05/2015 09:26

I feel intrusive seeing scan pictures of my OWN babies let alone other people's.

Don't you think this is a little odd? It's a picture.

As for the threads, its just fun - slightly more scientific than the ring on a string test but still just a bit of fun.

I just ignore them.

Sparklingbrook · 06/05/2015 09:29

What Soup said.

It's not like there's billions of these threads in Chat or anything. I've never seen one. Confused

HetzelNatur · 06/05/2015 09:30

I think I need to hide conception and pregnancy again. Then they will all just disappear by magic. Smile

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 06/05/2015 09:34

What are the thread titles like? Can you tell from the title that it's going to be one of those pics?

Seems a shame to hide topics that might be relevant to you just because of a few threads you would rather not see IYKWIM.

HetzelNatur · 06/05/2015 09:37

Yes, you can normally tell. Things like 'anyone guess pink or blue, skull theory' or 'nub theory xxx' or 'can anyone do nun (sic) theory x'

OP posts:
WilsonWilsonWoman · 06/05/2015 09:42

Grin nun theory.

HetzelNatur · 06/05/2015 09:43

Lovely typo isn't it!

OP posts:
thetroubleis · 06/05/2015 09:59

My sonographer was a miserable git and basically told me to fuck off and get a private scan when I asked if she could see if it was a boy or a girl on the 20 week scan.

They are not obliged to tell even if they see.

seaoflove · 06/05/2015 10:06

They're not "genitals", but 99% of these posters don't understand the first thing about nub theory (which is genuine) because their scan photos invariably don't show the frigging nub. That pisses me off Grin
