To think this is a bit unfair?

A competition running on facebook. Once they reach 500 likes they are going to pick initials out of a scrabble bag. I've said that I've got no chance of winning due to having a J and B for initials. The guy said, well I'm sure theres a J and B in there. Well yes but theres 6 Ts and Rs so they have a much higher chance of coming out. WIBU to point this out?

Meant to say theres 1 J and 2 Bs.

VelvetRose · 24/04/2015 07:02

I'd never have thought of that but it's a fair point!

ImNameyChangey · 24/04/2015 07:03

YANBU. It's not well thought out at all! There are online "hats" for this kind of thing.

SoupDragon · 24/04/2015 07:04

Have you had to pay to enter?

ImNameyChangey · 24/04/2015 07:05

She is "Paying" by liking and sharing Soup Likes and shares are as good as cash to Facebook businesses.

Andrewofgg · 24/04/2015 07:08

ffs unless you are paying cash it's a bit of fun. If you don't like it don't enter and if that is the biggest worry you have you are very lucky indeed.

CodswallopPie · 24/04/2015 07:09

No, no payment and I actually don't want the prize, i was going to give it to my brother. But anyone else with "rare" initials will not have a fair chance.

CodswallopPie · 24/04/2015 07:11

Namechange fail! Why can't it keep the same name on the same thread?!

No, its not my biggest problem, however I'm allowed to ask questions on an online forum, same as anyone else.

SoupDragon · 24/04/2015 07:12

A fair chance at something free that is, it seems, being offered by a small business if they are aiming for just 500 likes.

And no, clicking a "like" button for a page is not the same as paying.

Change your name to one heavy on A and E. Problem solved.

Happy to help.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 24/04/2015 08:34

Do they say whether they are using the whole scrabble set, or if they have picked out one each of A to Z to use?

Because if they are using the whole set YANBU and they are a bit stupid. Sounds like a badly designed draw. What about double barrelled names. What if there is more than one person with the same initials?

But one of each wouldn't work either as it would prevent people called John Jones from winning, so they would need 2 of each letter to make it fair to John Jones.

But then John Jones would still be disadvantaged compared to John Smith because if the J comes out there is only one J left and 2 Ss .

And there you have quite a complex statistical problem - how many of each tile would you need so John Smith is not significantly disadvantaged compared to John Smith. I think it would be a lot.

mrsfuzzy · 24/04/2015 08:41

sorry, but do people really waste their lives doing this crap ? two or three minutes of your life you'll never get back, it all adds up. amusing really.

AuntyMag10 · 24/04/2015 08:52

What a waste of a worry.

Trills · 24/04/2015 09:00

Unless they have one of every letter and put the first letter back before picking the second.

kent43 · 24/04/2015 10:41

Yanbu. My dd had same proble with dice. The teacher rolled 2 dice to see which child could participate in something she desperately wantex to do. She got a 2. Surely a bloody maths teacher could see how unfair that was.

TeenAndTween · 24/04/2015 10:57

You probably also need to take into account the frequency distribution of initials of first names and surnames. e.g. In my DD's class there are loads whose surname begins with M.

GraysAnalogy · 24/04/2015 12:14

It's just a bit of fun for god's sake.
