To be pissed off everytime I buy chicken

Everytime I buy those raw chicken breasts from Tesco/Asda they go off after two days, even though the use by date is another 3-4 days. They smell like sulphur, especially underneath when I take it out of the packet. I have the same problem with beef. Could the meat be off or is it just letting off natural gasses after being injected with water/preservatives? Seriously pissed off with this now.

Maybe try taking it out of the packaging & putting it in a tupperware/ plastic box in the fridge?

TBH though buying it fresh to freeze & then take out as needed would be safer & less wasteful as PP said.

You can also take advantage of larger packs on offer & split them up prior to freezing.

I think 5 is hotter than one.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 21/04/2015 19:49

No. 5 us the coldest!

mixedpeel · 21/04/2015 19:50

Agree re fridge temp - check your manual as my numbers represent actual temp (allegedly), ie 3 is 3 degrees C, so 1 would be the coldest.

Justusemyname · 21/04/2015 20:40

Well one is coldest in my fridge. It's about the power needed to keep it cold, rather than temperature

I had off chicken once - it reeked like bad bad fish and had a yellowish tinge on the surface. It went in the bin

Yes def more fish smell not a bleach one!

Tigresswoods · 21/04/2015 22:00

I would urge you to seriously find out about local butchers. We are fortunate to have one close by. Chicken tastes of chicken, is bigger & cheaper than the supermarket. It a win win.

Marmite27 · 21/04/2015 22:08

Bleach was the general consensus of everyone I made smell it Shock

ispyfispi · 21/04/2015 22:20

Could you be pregnant?! I kept throwing meat out that 'smelt funny' until dh convinced me it was fine and my nose was being super sensitive!

Marmite - some chicken is washed in bleach before packing.

Fish smell could be what the chicken was fed on before it was killed. Fish meal is a common additive to poultry feed. It is cheap and adds weigh fast. Corn fed chicken is better.

I used to work in an animal feed mill many years ago as well as clean poultry sheds in my gap year.

Lets just say you really don't want to know.

See if there are any farmers markets near you, you might be in luck. I go to the Saturday one in Birmingham for my meat, its way cheaper and far better quality than the supermarkets.
