Are you allowed to do light hearted in AIBU? Not sure, but who goes.

Anyway, in work today, I had a query with a certain department. Won't say which. I rang switchboard to be put through and waited 5 minutes which was frustrating. Finally got through and the lady said "Hello, name of department". I then explained at length what the problem was before she said "I can't help, this is reception"

I put my phone on mute (so I thought) and said to my colleague "that plonker could have said she was on reception". Only to hear a voice say "You didn't give me a chance to say I was only on reception, I will just put you through"

She then hung up on me.

I definitely think I deserved that. Mortified doesn't even cover it

Haha, I once had a bailiffs company turn up at my house looking for someone else. I phoned their main offices trying to resolve the problem and was met by the rudest, most vile woman on the other end. I thought I'd muted the phone when I said to DH "seriously, this has to be a piss-take, I can't believe they'd allow someone this stupid on their phones" and she went "I can hear you, you know". I was dying inside but brazened it out and replied "congratulations, your ears work even if your brain doesn't". She hung up on me. Cow.

It'll teach you to check you're definitely on mute!f

Never ever trust the mute button. I'm sure phone manufacturers just include a mute button for a laugh.

Not sure that you wholly deserved it, OP. If she had time to say "Hallo, Department Name", she had time to say "Hallo, Department Name, Reception here". Equally it wasn't particularly polite just to react by saying "I can't help, this is reception": it would have been much more sensible to say something like "So sorry, I can't help, but I'll put you through to X who can".

well yes i suppose you did rather but ive done this the lady on the other end of the phone clearly thought she had muted me when i rang to complain and was slating me in a very nasty way (back story is i paid for a subscription online and they didnt send me my magazine they took my money and they sent me a bill and every dam month i had to ring and sort it) she was telling her friend so this stupid cow wants to talk to my boss im sick to death of her whining nag nag nag im not putting her through so i told her i knew her name i knew they recorded calls and i was reporting her to her boss
