There's another current thread on this on AIBU. It's a horrific case, it's awful to think how this may have been written off as self defence if that video footage wasn't available. The easy assumption to make because the officer was white and the victim was black is that this was a racist murder but who knows, maybe the officer was just a psychopath. I think that the eyes of America will be watching this case though and that it does have serious implications for race relations.

I heard a heartbreaking statement from the victimss poor mother earlier.

" I want this man to realise this was not an animal he shot at ......this was MY SON "

There was a fascinating, if depressing, programme on radio 4 the other day about black people being shot in the US. One woman had started a campaign after her brother? was shot by police. She said that she tells all the men in her family how to behave if the police stop you - keep hands on steering wheel at all times, be super polite and deferential. Apparently lots of black families do the same thing. All to prevent a racist police officer getting a bit trigger happy.

I can tell this happens I am a mother of a black son and I taught him how to behave if he gets stopped by the police like you would teach your child how to cross the road

The mayor of new york has a black white and has publicly said he has also had to teach his sons how to be passive towards the police
