Dd (5) is outside (secure back garden) playing, I'm inside mning pottering around, clearing up watching tv

dp rang, asked where dd was and was shocked I'd let her play outside on her own. So should I really be outside with her, it's cold.

She's not complained about me not being there, has swing/slide/playhouse.

Can you see her at all times op? If so then yanbu.

If you can see her at all times, it's not an issue to me.

I let my 20 month old play outside if I'm in the kitchen as I can see him. I do leave the window open so I can hear him as well and the back door open when he wants to come in.

He's a really hands on always hovering type.

No I can't see her right now I'm sat in the living room, but can hear her "singing"

I once popped out whilst husband was mowing the lawn.

when I got back he was inside, lawn not finished.

Toddler (18 months) was napping & he wanted to be able to hear if he woke up.

i thought that that was OTT.

the lawn doesn't take that long & toddler was safe in a cot.

your OH is crazy, even if you can't see her at all times.

I didn't like my 5 year old being out front without me last year though, DH says I'm being daft abd he'll be fine.

You don't need to be able to see a 5 year old at all times in a secure back garden! I'd let a 2 year old play outside so long as I was keeping an ear out.

My DC are outside, they are 2 and 3 playing in our mud kitchen. I'm sat here having a quick cup of tea before the clean up operation begins :)
As long as you can see/hear them and theres no way they can get out of the garden it's fine in my eyes.

My 22month old is currently in the backyard playing in his car and slide. Back door is open. If he shouts I can hear him. I don't feel the need to be out there with him watching him sit in his car lol

My 3 and 6 year olds play in the back garden by themselves all the time. It's secure and they love pottering about by themselves. Your DH is BU.

My 4 & 6 year olds play outside without me hovering. As long as I can hear them, its fine. Silence, however, would be considered suspicious!!

I tend to potter within sight of them, but feel okay nipping into another room. I probably wouldn't watch TV as I'd want to listen out for them too. Nor would i go up to the top of the house to sort through boxes of crap to throw out, which is actually what I need to do.

So I'm here, dispensing my thoughts amongst you all and drinking a hot chocolate instead

Sister two spent alot of their time in the garden playing in the sandpit, their playhouse, on their various play cars and the slide. They usually alone with the back door open. Theyve been doing that since age 2-3. When ive popped out to keep them company ive told to go back inside as they playing. Its their space and their time. Any problems we can hear and usually see them! Yanbu

I used to let dd age 4 play in the secure garden by herself until one day she came back in saying "yum, yum!" Now I hover.

I think it does children good to have the freedom to play unobserved, even if they might eat the odd snail.

Please don't let your dh helicopter over her. He will stifle her imaginary play by insisting adults are constantly hovering.

All of my 4 played outside in our large enclosed garden together and alone and I remember watching dd playing with an imaginary friend from the bedroom

Of course it's fine.

And you don't need to see her all the time. Just check her and listen every now and again.
