It says in the article that she shouldn't have been entitled to maternity leave at all, but was mistakenly told she could take it, so sounds like miscommunication on both sides.

The fact that she is a 'working class mother' should have nothing to do with it though. What a strange and patronising sentence to include in the article Confused

They would have to count as 'employed' rather than self-employed, or something else entirely - I don't know what their employment status and hence rights are.
