Or maybe the dose is too low?
Posting for traffic sorry. Ended up in out of hours on saturday after he started getting poorly in the morning, 5 days prior he'd had really terrible diarrhoea (sorry!) And Saturday started pulling at his nappy and demanding to changed and lots of tears.
Hes only 2 so cant really explain so cant say much more than it is sore and it hurts when peepee.
Hospital prescribed trimethorprim and based the dosage on his age After finding pus and protein in his nappy sample.
He is chunky and tall so I'm worrying it is very effective, Today is still upset when urinating, ok this morning but very very tired now.
Can anyone offer any advice?
He's had lots of fluids and jelly etc as snacks

When did he start, what is the dose, and how many days of medication was he given?

With many antibiotics, it takes 3-4 days before a noticeable improvement happens, but then getting better happens rapidly. Hopefully this will be the case for you too!

Why do you think the antibiotics aren't working?

ahbollocks · 17/03/2015 16:38

5mls twice a day. Just in my own experience of anti biotics I perk up quickly. Hes never been ill like this before, only little colds so maybe I am being a bit pfb

It sounds about right though I am not an expert... 5 mls is about 50mg, and standard dose is around 4 mg per kg of body weight. Even if your DS is big for his age, say 16kg instead of the average 12kg or so, it's not outrageously low and should still be effective. (5mls twice a day would not be a silly dose for a child twice his age).

If you are worried, go back to the doc though!

After 7 days I would expect the symptoms to have settled. Is he unwell?

I would try and get another urine sample and book in to see the GP. Do you know if they have sent a sample to the lab at the hospital , they should have done and your GP will be able to check that it was a urinary infection and that the antibiotics he was on were the correct ones

Did they send a sample to be tested? My dd has kidney reflux so has had a lot of infections, I think you should have had some improvement by now
