Apologies if there's already one of these threads. I did have a quick look.

Kind of light hearted but I have genuinely cringed several times while reading my facebook newsfeed this evening - I sometimes wonder why on earth people don't actually thank and appreciate their loved ones to their faces rather than put it on facebook where everyone reads it. It reads so oddly - I'm meaning the ones where the status directly addresses an invidiual ( 'thank you for being my best friend Joe Bloggs' as oppose to 'grateful for having such wonderful friends'

These are some of the classics I've seen. Anyone else care to share? (yeah, I know, mean hearted, cynical etc etc but it's all anonymous and I'm in a tired grouchy mood Grin )

some words changed a bit just in case but pretty much these:

  1. Thank you X and Y for my lovely card and [named very expensive gift] I am spoilt! I love you both so much every day. Not only are you both clever but extremely good looking too. Lots of love, squishes and cuddles [irritating pet name for mum]

  2. Happy Mothers Day Mum. It's taken me a lot of years to realise how blessed I am to have you. You are the kindest, strongest and most genuine person I know. We've been through some tough times together and never once have you let me down. Especially this past year; I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you for being my parent but also my friend. I know you'd do anything for me and I'd equally do anything for you. Love you always. Your one and only little girl, Y

  3. I am the luckiest, most blessed mummy in the world today. Just lying in bed being spoiled and looking around at everything I have. Perfect.

  4. Thank you for remembering me today X. Wherever you are and wherever you go I will be here, loving you and thinking of you. You are my reason for being and make me so happy.

In contrast, this is the BEST mother's day status I have ever seen!:

Happy Mother's Day to the most mediocre mother on the planet. I'd say you were the best mum but I can't truly judge because I was such a gem to bring up... Looking forward to seeing you later! (Love you xxxx)

A facebook status should be funny, entertaining or informative - otherwise don't bother with it - AIBU?

I have seen some really bleurgh ones including pictures of breakfast trays, roast dinners , and piles of gifts.

It's very funny because these people live in the same house so instead of posting it on FB go an enthuse over your fabulous children in person? Give them a thank you hug or something. Grin

Blazing88 · 15/03/2015 19:32

It's made me want to delete FB today!!!!!

Biggest pile of crap ever. Trying to compete with how much they'd be bought themselves.

Yes. I had a shit mother's day !

steff13 · 15/03/2015 19:34

My FB status today is, "Beward the Ides of March." Of course, Mother's Day here is in May, so there is little chance of sappy MD's statuses.

TheAnalyst · 15/03/2015 19:36

I have been tempted to indulge in baiting about how it's not actually Mother's Day (we don't have it across t'pond for another couple of months) in the full knowledge that people would have me killed for even mentioning that.

Sparklingbrook · 15/03/2015 19:36

I only saw because I was nosing on DS2's FB and he is 13 so I think that makes a difference.

I don't have FB myself for lots of very good reasons.

kewtogetin · 15/03/2015 19:39

I hate the staged photos, card and artfully arranged tat from 'card factory'.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 15/03/2015 19:42

Oh far far too many to list. I've stayed off Facebook since this morning, couldn't take any more. THANK THEM TO THEIR FACES!!!

CinderellaRockefeller · 15/03/2015 19:44

Anything that finishes with..."...so blessed"

Because people think it makes them sound all humble and appreciative. But it doesn't, it makes them sound like they are showing off with an additional side order of smug.

I'm with you OP. Some serious cringeworthy posts on FB today!

HermioneWeasley · 15/03/2015 19:47

It's the ones thanking their dead mothers I find odd. Do they have FB in the afterlife?

Only1scoop · 15/03/2015 19:48

I agree with Sparkling....

Marshy · 15/03/2015 19:50

I have never been happier than I am today that I suspended my fb account several months ago.

Russell Brand on Twitter posted a picture of him with his Mum and something like 'I used to live in this person! Happy Mother's Day!' which I quite liked.

thewomaninwhite · 15/03/2015 19:57

I think that it a little harsh about thanking Mums who are not longer here. My Mum is very much here but my DD1 is not. I posted today about remembering here too, I am also her mother. Mother's Day is hard when you are missing your child or your Mum. Perhaps some people on my feed thought it was odd. Who cares, they are lucky enough to have all their children with them in most cases.

It's easy to forget how hard days like today can be for some people.

Nothavingfunrightnow · 15/03/2015 19:58

Marshy, me too! I deactivated about a month ago and I feel FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

SergeantJarhead · 15/03/2015 19:58

I have banned any 'Mother's Day' tat in my house, my son (2) has no idea that today is even slightly different from any other day and I'll never make him 'make Nanny a nice little card'. Bleurgh. All nice and well for anyone who enjoys Mother's Day and wants to thank their mum/nan/sister/friend/cat for being a wonderful parent (?) but I've read 'soooooo spoilt and soooooo blessed' just too many fucking times today. If you're 'soooooo blessed' why aren't you out in the real world enjoying it hmm? If I drop Facebook I have no contact with my entire family in Northern England, they're Catholic ... and huge.
On a positive note, I had a lie in.

Aeroflotgirl · 15/03/2015 19:58

Yanbu at all, newsfeed littered with piles of gifts bought by their DP, and vomit inducing messages. Dh helped dd make me a card, no gifts though.

Sparklingbrook · 15/03/2015 19:59

I can't think of a way I could have FB and it be satisfactory for me WRT so many different things.

I often wonder if Twitter would be better. More words and less pictures.

Sparklingbrook · 15/03/2015 20:00

Or is it 'fewer'? Confused Blush

SergeantJarhead · 15/03/2015 20:00

thewomaninwhite I agree very much with you. People always forget how important 'holiday' days can be for other people.
