To not check pockets before washing clothes?

There is a debate in my house this morning. Pair of jeans on floor next to but not on wash pile. I have washed them with his wallet in. He says it's my responsibility to check pockets before washing his stuff. I say he's 36 he can empty his pockets before chucking stuff on the floor himself. Fortunately there was no cash inside only cards so they will be fine once they dry I think. Should I check pockets? I don't even do that for my sons who are 8 and 10!

Well, unless you wash each person's clothes separately, or you like picking shreds of tissue off clothes, or getting repairs done, then whoever loads the machine should double check.

Any particular reason why it's you who loads the machine?

Mamabear14 · 15/03/2015 10:34

My kids don't leave tissue in pockets and they are children. A grown man is surely capable of putting a snotty tissue in the bin by himself?! I do all the washing, not sure why to be honest, it's just the way it's worked out.

No. YNBU

Same rules apply in my house. You're a grown man, you can check your own pocket, you're not 5!

grannytomine · 15/03/2015 10:37

I have always been opposed to the death penaly. I am just old enough to remember when Ruth Ellis was executed and remember the feeling aginst that. However, I would definitely re introduce the death peanlty in my house to people who leave tissues in pockets||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

magoria · 15/03/2015 10:38

Leave them on the floor next time if he can't put them with the rest of the washing pile.

WorraLiberty · 15/03/2015 10:39

This comes up so often on Mumsnet, talk about a first world problem.

It takes seconds for whoever's doing the laundry to give the pockets a quick check.

Idontseeanydragons · 15/03/2015 10:40

YANBU, everyone here knows that pockets need to be emptied out because I won't do it. DH learnt the hard way years ago when he left his credit card in his jeans pocket for some reason and it went through a 49 degree wash. He has been very careful since then, as has DS after a couple of bus pass incidents.
They'll learn.

WorraLiberty · 15/03/2015 10:40

Ruth Ellis??

Bad taste much? Hmm

Moln · 15/03/2015 10:40

He's 36 and can empty his own pockets (before he drops them on the floor with the expectation they'll be washed for him)

GobblersKnob · 15/03/2015 10:40

I don't check.

Tissue shite usually comes off with a quick tumble.

Idontseeanydragons · 15/03/2015 10:40

40 degree.

Hakluyt · 15/03/2015 10:41

He has no right to be an arse about it and it's his fault. But I would expect anyone doing washing to check pockets. Everyone makes mistakes and I wouldn't wash a phone on a point of principle.

StrawberryCheese · 15/03/2015 10:43

I don't see the problem with checking pockets, but then DH also loads the washing machine and checks so it's not all down to me. The wallet must have been very small and light for you not to notice, my DHs wallet weighs a ton. The only way it could get in the wash if we left it on purpose.

dancestomyowntune · 15/03/2015 10:43

Yabu.

I DID check the pockets yesterday and still managed to get a block in the filter that stopped the machine from working mid cycle. A paper clip had evaded me Confused but thirty minutes later I had fixed it myself. Very proud I was too. Grin

Mamabear14 · 15/03/2015 10:44

I didn't notice it was in there, it went in with an armful of stuff. It's only light, driving license and bank cards. If I had seen it I would have removed it, but it's not my job to go through every single pocket before putting them in considering I do all the washing. Grown ups need to take their own responsibility for their stuff

TiggieBoo · 15/03/2015 10:45

I once put all DH's bank cards through the wash. Mighty argument about whose responsibility it is and how he should know better and so on. The very next week I washed my own jeans with a credit card in the pocket. Since then I've been checking all pockets, it's just not worth the hassle. Accidents happen.

Have you ever had a screw driver go through the wash.

The noise is disturbing

YaBBu (both)

WorraLiberty · 15/03/2015 10:46

'Every single pocket'

Fuck me. What is he, a clown? Grin

Can't believe the fuss people make over such a simple task.

gobbin · 15/03/2015 10:47

My DH and DS (18) are pretty good at this, thiugh DS's cash card has gone through the wash twice. I don't check.

Neither do I wash any socks or trousers that are rolled/balled up. DS gets called to sort them out before they go in.

Hobby2014 · 15/03/2015 10:48

DH put his clothes in the wash the other day. Machine making horrible noise. Stopped it and removed from machine:
2 x packs of tissues.
1 x pack of chewing gums
1 x metal padlock
1 x metal bolt
1 x 5p
I always ask him if he's emptied his pockets.
He always says yes.
Hmm

MmeMorrible · 15/03/2015 10:48

I would have agreed with you but have just paid out to replace my washing machine after the old one was terminally damaged by a giant sized paper clip left in the pocket of something.

bimandbam · 15/03/2015 10:51

If its in the floor in this house its fair game for washing. If you haven't emptied your pockets and I don't notice its tough shit.

If it doesn't matter enough to dp what is in his.pockets then it doesn't matter enough for me to check.

Dp is a builder and has about a billionty pockets in his (minging) work trousers. I would probably miss something even if I did check.

Yanbu.

And I speak as someone who has frequently emptied the filter to find screw tips and coins in there.

Moln · 15/03/2015 10:54

Only takes a few seconds to give pockets a quick check before putting them in the wash basket.

grannytomine · 15/03/2015 11:05

WorraLiberty why? I was putting my very strong feelings about tissues in the washing in some context. I don't empty pockets because I don't want to come across snotty tissues and other disgusting things, I have brought up three sons, I have lost count of the number of washes ruined with a tissue. I would happily reintroduce the death penalty for it despite my otherwise anti death penalty views. I make no apology and my family know my views.
