To be completely fed up with dentist

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen my dentist since just before Christmas for an implant on a broken tooth and the follow up problems.
To get to the point last week I had really bad tooth ache and went to the dentist who couldn't really see a problem but replaced an existing filling in case it was that (while doing this the tooth which I had the implant on is super sensitive to cold so he did something to this tooth too). Went away and my jaw was sore for a few days and tooth ache was still there but assumed it would settle after a few days and it didn't. Managed to get another appointment for the Monday just gone - nearly a week since tooth ache started. Again dentist couldn't find anything. The tooth I thought was causing the pain has had a root canal done (well apparently) so it can't be that one. The dentist suggested I go home and try to work out which tooth is causing the pain even though he said the pain might be radiating from somewhere else.
Basically I've had enough. I can't work out which tooth it is and although I can manage the pain with painkillers I've been taking them non stop for a week now (should add that I'm off work with gastroenteritis and I'm pretty sure that they are contributing to the upset stomach). I've been 'squeezed in' for a 5 min appointment before they close tomorrow but what is he going to be able to do?
Would I be unreasonable to contact the out of hours dentist for a second opinion even though I'm able to manage the pain? I'm rapidly loosing faith in this dentist after both this and the implant debacle.

Time to change your dentist.

Dentist here. Definitely get a second opinion. Though not via the emergency service. They will not have the time to assess and plan properly. Take a recommendation from a friend or relative who is happy with their dentist.

A couple of points. You don't get an implant on a broken tooth. They go in the gap where a tooth is missing. Are you talking about a its crown? They are often troublesome. Also it is absolutely possible to get pain from a root filled tooth. You can get a recurrent infection, a crack and other things. As for the dentist sending you home to "work out which tooth hurts". Sod that!!! That's her job!

Sorry post crown not its crown in the second paragraph.

I feel your pain. Got toothache here too, had temporary filling last week now a tooth on the other side hurts!

Horrible innit.

WombatStewForTea · 11/03/2015 16:41

Thanks for the replies.
Bonzo - I call it an implant as that's what the dentist called it but I thought it was a crown! He tool a mould of the tooth then sent it off to be made? Just know that it was band 3 Confused
I'll start ringing around to find a new dentist that's taking on new patients. Unfortunately the one locally everyone goes to isn't accepting new patients.

Did they x ray at all? I would think that's the only way of determining if there is an infection causing the pain. I would get a second opinion straight away. Sorry you are in pain. I had an abscess once and the pain was so bad i was throwing up. Nothing worse than toothache IMO. Hope you get it sorted soon.

bonzo77 · 11/03/2015 16:45

Right. It's definitely a post crown. Not an implant. You do not get implants on an NHS band3!!! I hate this misleading terminology. Change dentist. Even if you have to travel.

WombatStewForTea · 11/03/2015 16:52

Yes he did take x rays.
I've got an appointment at a different dentist tomorrow.
Thanks everyone.
