Urgent advice needed. Bleeding nipple not BF related

My left nipple was oozing blood the other day and I'm waiting for a referral at breast clinic. Youngest DC is 9 so not BF. I'm worried. Has anyone had similar. Google is not reassuring me! Thanks

I haven't had similar no but didn't want to read and run! I hope your referral comes through quickly...please step away from Dr Google though, it's very easy to think the worse! Fingers crossed you're not waiting much longer x

Had a similar issue when I was 17, so not bf related, and was referred to breast clinic. They came to the conclusion that it was a blocked duct, apparently even when not bf, your nipples still excrete oils or something. Happened again at 23, the conclusion was the same. This time though, I had had the contraceptive implant.

According to the clinicians I saw, hormonal changes can cause leaky nipples, if they get blocked, it can lead to inflammation and inflammation can lead to bleeding, infection and so on.

Definitely get checked, try not to worry in the meant time. I had no serious consequences following my experiences, so it isn't always something scary.

Don't know if this helps really Flowers

Have you changed anything that could affect you hormonally (medications? contraception? chance of pregnancy?)

I have had oozing dark blood from one nipple on two separate occasions; when I changed contraception, and in the early stages of one of my pregnancies. Stopped on it's own after a few weeks and never any further complications.

I hope it gets sorted out for you soon. Flowers

No changes, but I'm 41 and recently had a missed period. Deffo not pregnant so might be hormonal

With the greatest respect, the second time I went back, they told me my body was sensitive to hormonal changes and most likely I would have the same issue when pregnant, after pregnancy and during the menopause.

Perhaps that is something to consider. Again, I am not very helpful, sorry Flowers

gubbygubby · 11/03/2015 11:58

No that is helpful! Thanks

I had the same, it was a blocked duct sorted itself out without treatment.

Hope you're okay. Flowers

I had exactly the same thing about 18 months ago. I was refered to the breast clinic and had lots of tests

And everything was fine. the consultant said it was just one of those things and that it can happen quite a lot without people ever noticing it

I was terrified before my appointment and had convinced myself it was something terrible but it was so worth having a full check up to put my mind at rest

Fingers crossed your appointment is soon and that it is nothing to worry about xx

It's probably nothing. I had a bout of mastitis (DC are 8 and 6) which went with a/bs, then months later I had a tiny amount of bleeding from one nipple. I had a referral to a breast clinic, they couldn't see anything and sent me home. It all happened again 7 months later, went back to the breast clinic and they punch biopsied me as well as ultrasound and mammogram. By now I had a lump, and bleeding. I was diagnosed with DCIS, which doesn't usually present with a lump, so I was unusual. One mastectomy later and I'm fine now, but please bear in mind yours will probably be nothing. Mine was. I'm 39 btw. The ultrasounds and my mammogram looked normal, it was only from the biopsy that they noticed anything. Good luck.

I had a bleeding nipple about 3 years ago. Saw it in my bra and kept looking for a wound. I squeezed my nipple because it felt heavy like I wanted to breast feed. When this dark oozy bloody substance emerged I went into a tail spin. You're right there is little on the net. Went to gp who found nothing referred for a scan and then to specialist. Nothing found. I talked to a friend who had had cancer and she said the bleeding can be hormonal. So please don't think the worst get it checked in all probability it's hormonal. Good luck.

I'm at the Breast clinic tomorrow. So fingers crossed. I'm supposed to be having a breast lift in 3 weeks so will maybe need to put that on hold.
