I've just arrived in New York and have realised I've packed the wrong travel adaptor - where can I buy a UK to USA adaptor?!

Usually I wouldn't be panicking so much but I'm staying on my own in an AirBnb and have arrived to huge disappointment, not sure what I was expecting but I am wholeheartedly regretting not staying in a hotel and this has just tipped me over the edge!

Any ideas? I'll be going out first thing in the morn. Thanks

anywhere...Duane reade? honestly, walk a couple of blocks in any direction and you'll find somewhere selling them. It's NYC fgs!

Third Avenue, East side, start at 50th, within three blocks on your right.

Sorry re-read op & saw you're staying in an airbnb.

SoonToBeSix · 11/03/2015 06:53

What is wrong with the airbnb?

babymouse · 11/03/2015 06:55

Target, CVS, Walgreens, Best Buy, mom and pop electric store...

Rosa · 11/03/2015 07:10

You will find them all over .....

wowfudge · 11/03/2015 07:13

Staples is another place you'll probably find one.

NotQuiteCockney · 11/03/2015 07:19

Internet says Radio Shack, Duane Reade, or Rite Aid.

Meloria · 11/03/2015 08:02

Not helpful but it always puzzles me why posters have internet to post on MN but not to google the nearest pharmacy or electrical shop, or whatever is needed at the time.

Roussette · 11/03/2015 08:12

Ask the owner of the Airbnb, surely they can either give you one or tell you where to get one... you are probably 20 paces from a tourist shop selling them!

There'll be a CVS within about 5 mins' walk! We live in the US (not NYC) and had a hideous AirBNB experience in NYC last summer. I haven't used them since, despite having used them successfully many times in the UK. I emailed pictures of the apartment to AirBNB - it was filthy and stank - and they paid for us to stay in the Marriott about 2 mins from Central Park. We had two small children and it was just dire. In future, try VRBO instead. We've stayed in some lovely places with them (Vacation Rental by Owner). Good luck with the adapter!

You will have no problems buying a UK to US adaptor. None.

I think your disproportionate panic is down to your dissappointment with the apartment. As I understand, Airbnb hold your money and don't release to the owner until 24 hours after your arrival. This gives you a chance to raise a complaint or grievance, and they'll continue to hold the money until it's sorted. From experience, Airbnb customer service is excellent. They run a system of local mediators who 1. Know the area and 2. Will liaise with the owners for you. If the local mediator can't sort you out, the complaint is pushed up the chain.

I think you need to contact Airbnb and get your complaint in first thing.

It might also be worth remembering that Airbnb subletting is mostly illegal in NYC. The owner may be quite keen to sort out your issues.

Thanks all, I had been googling but all I have been able to find is 'USA to x converters', no use to me with a uk plug. Have a few ideas where to look now

The AirBnb itself is fine, everything as advertised. It is just quite bare bones and big/echoey for one person, I haven't travelled alone for over 2 years so think it was just a bit of a shock. I had a hellish flight over as well, with delays + lost baggage, plus the cabbie dropped me off at the wrong street -que me knocking on a door for 15 mins in pouring rain thinking id been completely conned!

Feel MUCH better already after a couple of hours sleep, emotions and hormones back to normal. Signing off now to enjoy my return to NYC x
