To think this is a bit odd?

My friend has just named her DS Severus. As in Snape, that's who she named him after, because she's a big fan of the character. Her argument is by the time he gets to school, no one will know about Harry Potter. I've suggested that I think he might get picked on at school. I don't have a problem with the name in itself, but I think it has unfortunate connotations.
Am I being unreasonable to think this?

Harry Potter will be forgotten in four years' time? Seems unlikely.

EveBoswell · 08/03/2015 08:17

What about Seve Ballesteros, the gorgeous Spanish golfer? His name was not short for Severus but not far from it. A shortened name to Sev or Sevvie would be fine. And Severus was a Saint's name so your friend has a good boy.

I may out myself by saying this, but there is a child in my DC's school called Adolf. Confused

Galvanized · 08/03/2015 08:21

Is it your friend's first baby OP? Might she not be visiting MN for perhaps the first time over the next few days or weeks and visit the most popular topic? How crap will she feel reading this bitchy thread?

Fwiw I have never read/seen Harry Potter and I don't like the way the name looks.

LineRunner · 08/03/2015 08:41

It's the name (or part of the name) of a number of Roman emperors, including the notable Septimius Severus.

So no weirder than Marcus or Augustus, really.

I was in town a few weeks ago and I heard a mum shreik call out to her dd's "Beyonce, Tulissa. Get here NOW"

alrayyan · 08/03/2015 09:07

call you child whatever you like and if it's weird they will bear it and maybe end up liking it.
Being an adult Harry Potter fan is weird though. I would find that far more embarrassing than the name if I was a child.

SunshineDaisy · 08/03/2015 16:14

Just to clarify, I think Severus would make a gorgeous middle name and I think would be okay if named because she liked the name severus. It's the fact that he was just named after the character and on top of that, his middle name is Albus (play on the character at the end of the book). Her eldest son told everyone at school about his new brother's name and one child knew the song "Snape, Snape, Severus Snape" and the boys in the year have been singing that to him at late (found out from DS3). That's why I expressed my concerns. It only takes one child to work out that connection...

Severus is a cracking name, Sev sounds great! I also love Balthazar [ just bunging that one in, nowt to do with thread I know].

I was never one for unusual names for my kids but hats off to those who choose one.

Chillyegg · 08/03/2015 16:23

Are you just a teeny bit jealous because your worried your child might be a muggle? Wink

Ratarse · 08/03/2015 16:30

I'm going to have to dig out my Harry Potter books now........

kinkyfuckery · 08/03/2015 16:32

Did you tell her how you felt about it? Did she care?
Because there's a chance she'll find out from your thread.

HeisenbergsBlueMeth · 08/03/2015 16:37

I love harry potter but wouldn't name my child Severus. Each to their own though

Jackieharris · 08/03/2015 16:39

At least itsnt not Annakin like a boy I know!

NickiFury · 08/03/2015 16:42

YANBU. I'd be completely Confused Hmm. I'd never say anything though. It's one of the biggest rules in life - the only response to any baby name is "oh that's lovely!".

flora717 · 08/03/2015 17:31

I know a Thor, a kal'el, a Lonan, a Storm, An Arwen and a Galadriel, an Archer. Book based names have always snuck in there. I know a Roberta (Railway Children). Some are more subtle (I lived next to Polly and Sukey in my youth and a Georgina and Anne at school).

MaudeLebowski · 08/03/2015 17:41

I like it, but think it is too much for a first name. Cool middle name though.

Harry Potter is like Lord of the Rings, or the Chronicles of Narnia. Not going away.

InTheWhiteRoom · 08/03/2015 17:41

Sorry but lol at Severus. Grin

Although I am a HP fan and I named my cat Pigwidgeon.

AmserGwin · 08/03/2015 17:45

Yeah weird but none of your business
