To be concerned about how easily people can be brainwashed....

There is ISIL with their radicalisation, mother who was manipulated into killing Ayesha Ali, the cultural revolution in China and Nazi Germany where whole nations are brainwashed....I 'm pretty convinced that even now we are effectively self censored and brainwashed by extreme political correctness....So apart from critical thinking and debate which don't seem to be working very well at the moment, is it human nature to be susceptible to being brainwashed....it's all very worrying.....

What do you mean by 'brainwashed by extreme political correctness'? Could you give some examples?

queensansastark · 06/03/2015 15:47

I was thinking of the local councils, social workers and police in the child sexual exploitation cases when I wrote that.

'brainwashed by extreme political correctness'

don't get it

ilovesooty · 06/03/2015 15:49

I do loathe the term political correctness. It's lazy and non specific.

ilovesooty · 06/03/2015 15:50

Neither do I Samcro

As humans are social primates, submission to authority and group conformity are both extremely powerful subconscious impulses. With the right knowledge of sociology, psychology and history manipulation can be frighteningly easy on both an individual and collective level.

What's interesting is that the Conservative government has stripped critical, analytical and deconstructive thought out of the curriculum. It's also the reason the right-wing worked so hard to make 'media studies' a negative concept - anything that gives people tools to see through propaganda or analyse their own bias has been gutted or demonised.

Of course, the private schools to which they send their children do not teach to the same curriculum - instead, they subtly teach how to manipulate those who are. That's what they mean by leadership skills and cultural capital.

" brainwashed by extreme political correctness".
that kind of line does not really go with
" critical thinking" does it?

Tell us OP how we are brainwashed by extreme PC?

ilovesooty · 06/03/2015 15:54

I also want to know how the OP understands "self censored"

MephistophelesApprentice · 06/03/2015 15:54

Tell us how we are brainwashed by extreme PC?

Well, an example might be how any criticism of PC instantly triggers a response that focuses on that criticism rather than any points about brainwashing...

(Not that I agree we are brainwashed by extreme PC)

SunnyBaudelaire · 06/03/2015 15:55

I was asking the OP as there has been no point made about brainwashing has there?

SunnyBaudelaire · 06/03/2015 15:56

unless you have namechanged halfway through a thread?

MephistophelesApprentice · 06/03/2015 16:01

No, my apologies, I wasn't responding to you directly, but to the collective questions of previous posters. I wasn't trying to speak for the OP and I'm sorry if it appeared impolite.

CaoNiMa · 06/03/2015 17:08

Mephistopheles, for what it's worth, I very much agree with the first post you made.
