Someone is using our bin so there is no room for our rubbish

I live in a building with 6 flats , two of which have new occupants .

We have two black bins . Last year the bin men broke the lid off ours so the council gave us a new one , but never took the old one away . So we just keep it for emergencies (now and then we have to use it) . We never got round to putting a number on our new bin especially because all the old neighbours knew it was ours anyway .

So anyway , since the new neighbours moved in someone has been using our bin . Last week Dh put our number on it incase they thought it was just a spare bin .

Today dh went to put a bag into our bin and it was full so went to put it in the lidless bin and that was full too !

Now I have no problem with anyone using the lidless bin it is handy to have for all of us , but having two bins and no room to put our own rubbish - AIBU to be a bit peeved ?

And how do I find out who it is ? They both moved in at he same time so no idea and I don't really want to knock on their doors because the person who isn't doing it will feel accused and I don't want to run my neighbours up the wrong way .

Do you mean you have 2 black bins between the 6 flats or do you each have your own? Are the bins not all kept together so they have theirs with their number on? If so, we're their bins full too?

Maybe you should put a number on your bin? If it's new and numberless then maybe they think it belongs to them?

We have a bin for each flat but we have two because ours broke . Don't like to use our second one because as it has no lid the birds can get to it but it's good to have for emergencies (we put cardboard over it if we put food/nappies etc in it)

I didn't even think to check the other bins to see what ones are full BlushBlush

That's what we thought comedy so we did put our number on it . The lidless one has always had our number on it and they've filled it right up .

Are these wheely bins?

If you can't lock them, you could get hold of masses of those lightweight polystyrene packaging bits, fill some small bin bags with them, and use them to stuff your bin, straight after it's been emptied. Then each time you take a bag of real rubbish down, bring back one of the lightweight fake rubbish bags, so there's never any room for random people to put extra in.

A) you have a hell of a lot of rubbish if you're filling two bind
B) what does it matter which bin the rubbish goes in? If yours is full, put your rubbish in one which isn't.
Lots of flats have communal bins.

If you're that precious about your bin, move it, or lock it, or install CCTV.

Knock on the neighbours doors. Assume they are innocent and be all nice and chatty. Ask them if the council have given them their bin yet. It may be that they are selfish twats or it maybe that they are not used to the set up yet and are assuming the bins are all communal or it may be a genuine misunderstanding.

If you don't actually talk to them you will end up with a big passive aggressive wordless rift that gets all bitter and snotty. Just knock the bloody door!

Yeah it's wheelie bins . Will look into a lock for the lidded one but don't know what to do about the lidless one .

If they knocked on my door and asked me if they could use it I would absolutely have no problem with that . But the fact that we have two bins yet have to make a trip to the dump tonight is annoying Angry

Go through the rubbish in the bin. You should be able to find out whose rubbish it is.

Councils only issue 1 bin per household unless there are over a certain number of you (6 in my area). You therefore have one bin, with a lid that you shouldn't need to lock but it looks like you will have to.

Your council tax does not entitle you to two bins, the new lidded one was a replaceable for the old unlidded one which is no longer your bin.

I suggest you go to your neighbours, ask if the council has given them their bin yet, explain there is an unowned lidless one that used to be yours that can be used if they are awaiting their own.

Message given, problem solved.

Stop fretting over a bin that is no longer yours.

Just ask for another lidded bin to replace the lidless one again.

People put rubbish in our bin but I just take it out and put it on the ground. I know which house it is though so I tell the landlord and they take it to the dump.

(Plus the "spare"?)

It does seem as if you'll need a lock in future.

This time, either take out the rubbish that isn't yours & put it elsewhere, or put your rubbish in another bin?

Do all the bins have nrs on?

Yes all the bins have numbers on them (including the two new neighbours bins so they definitely have a bin)

Pressone afaik our LA doesn't work like that . When I still lived with my parents they had to ask for a second black bin (can't remember why now) and someone just comes up to check and make sure you're recycling properly and you actually do need it , and they give you it . Not that that's what happened here just saying thank all councils might work differently on that one .

Can you check the rubbish for obvious envelopes or packaging that might have their address? I wouldn't fancy digging through someone's rubbish but it might be worth a quick rummage.

Then put all their rubbish next to their own bin, knock on their door, and let them know the lidless bin is communal but there must be some misunderstanding, the other bins are one per flat and if they've got too much they'll need to ring the LA for an extra pickup cheeky fuckers

Maybe they just haven't looked at the numbers? When I lived in a flat I had this problem, neighbours kept using my bin but they stopped when I painted my flat no on the front of the bin in bright red paint!

If they've only just moved in, it could be a one time thing, rubbish from moving etc. But it's still utterly rude imo. They should have filled theirs then taken any extra to the dump.

Have you checked if theirs are full too?
