The dogs on these Facebook selling pages...

Have joined a local fb buy & sell pet page to keep an eye out for a neighbour's missing cat, as the page also has missing animals on it & I could bloody cry for all these animals! There are some fish, small furries & cats but mostly its people selling dogs but the same breed or crossed breeds over & over again. I'm looking at it now & these are the top few dogs that need to be rehomed or are for sale in order as they appear on the page:

Chihuahua
Another Chihuahua
American Bulldog
American Akita
Staffy/Springer cross
Rottweiler
Staffy puppies
Rottweiler/labrador cross
Shar Pei
Siberian Husky
American Bulldog
Chihuahua
Staffy
Staffy

All these poor dogs & most of them are not chipped or neutered or are 'boisterous' untrained then & some people's reason for selling is that the owner has simply found out they are pregnant. That's it! (owner pregnant not the dog). One seller has said that the puppy is trying to mate its mother but he doesn't want the pup neutered as he wants it to be 'I'd rather him be a full dog when he's older lol'

AIBU in wondering why the same breeds seem to appear over & over again. Chihuahuas are not status dogs are they?

Poor dogs, makes me so angry. And people fucking post on the page as well that they want a small free dog as a friend for their little girl & does anyone have one? No idea of breeds or of trying to find an animal that would suit their lifestyle. They just want a small cheap or free one.

Words fucking fail me!

They should be banned, its a disgrace.

ProfessorVonIgelfeld · 25/02/2015 21:03

You are definitely not BU. It's disgusting how animals can be shunted from pillar to post like this, with no concern for their welfare. They are not children's playthings, nor are they status symbols for inadequate people. I really despair for these poor creatures Angry Sad

londonrach · 25/02/2015 21:05

Complain to admin as most fb pages dont allow admin sells. If not link page to rspca..

girliefriend · 25/02/2015 21:08

Its depressing, people treat animals like any other commodity Sad

honeyroar · 25/02/2015 21:11

There are some real stupid idiots buy dogs nowadays - if it has a cute cut/shut name like Labradoodle etc they pay more, not even thinking whether it's suitable. There are some cruel idiots milking the stupid idiots and churning out puppies.

I think we really have to crack down. In my fantasy we would have all dogs chipped. Breeders would have to pay £100+ to register all dogs! there would be random checks on everyone selling on Facebook/Preloved and large fines for people selling unregistered/chipped dogs. Anyone selling on a dog would have to pay £100 to transfer to a new owner. Any dumped dog would be scanned and the previous owner would be fined £500. It might make people thinking of getting dogs think a little harder if it was harder to get rid of them.

whothehellknows · 25/02/2015 21:11

Yep, chihuahuas are status dogs. And apart from the people who just got a dog with no idea what ownership entailed, some of the dogs you see may well be stolen and being sold on for a quick buck.

whothehellknows · 25/02/2015 21:13

It's true, people have to fill out more paperwork for a car than they do a dog. I'd like to see a more rigorous system in place.

Gileswithachainsaw · 25/02/2015 21:15

heart breaking isn't it .

They deserve so much better. at least make them re home - able. train, neuter, vaccinate, socialise etc.

These flea ridden unloved untrained boisterous animals don't stand a chance poor things SadAngry

ghostinthecanvas · 25/02/2015 21:17

I was on dogsblog today. They have 4778 dogs looking for forever homes. Sad

MagratsHair · 26/02/2015 09:35

Oh FFS just had a look for the missing cat & there's a post with a pic on there saying someone bought a dog yesterday & can someone tell her what breed it is!

I had no ides chihuahuas were status dogs. Really?? I thought that the status dogs were the big ones.

MagratsHair · 26/02/2015 09:39

londonrach do you mean complain about the woman wanting a small free dog? The admin is pretty active on this page, they are very hot on people trying to give dogs away for free & remove any post that doesn't include a price for the animal.

There's a woman who's posted a pic of her dog's back leg asking what to do about it & some one has 'TAKE IT TO THE VETS!!!!' so there are some people with sense on there.

FayKorgasm · 26/02/2015 10:30

It would be great if there was a heavy crackdown on dog selling. Maybe have a couple of moderated sites where reputable registered breeders are allowed advertise and fine anyone using elsewhere. Fine people if a dog or cat is intact and they have not registered an intent to breed. Make it illegal to not have a dog or cat registered with a vet.

Debinaround · 26/02/2015 11:45

UANBU!

I absolutely hate the stupid people who do this. I agree with what honey and Fay say.
If I ruled the world that would be the first thing I would change.

My Pil bought their chihuahua from people like these. Paid £400 for him and said the house, when they went to pick him up, was filthy and smelly. I told them MY feelings.
They actually told me they felt like they had "rescued" him!!!

They just didn't get that they were increasing the problem. If no one buys the puppy's no one will breed them. It's not rocket science ffs.

They told me at least he is going to a good home. He could have gone to someone who abuses him.
These are the people who only walk their dogs once a week. Don't even get me started on that one...Angry

It annoys me when people slate the people buying the labradoodles etc when if you actually have a look in the dog homes very few if any of the dogs are these mixed breeds. Nearly all are of the types you describe. If people are going to shell out money for a 'designer dog' then they are more likely to be in it for the long run. It's the status dogs that are left in the kennels....It's not like there are hundreds of doodley-poodle-chons in them.

differentnameforthis · 26/02/2015 13:28

I called the RSPCA here (Australia) and reported one page for selling animals. I told them I was worried a dog that didn't like children would be places with one/that they aren't properly bred etc...but I was told that it is perfectly legal!

I was shocked, to say the least!

TheHoundsBitch · 26/02/2015 13:39

There absolutely are hundreds of doodley things in rescues StarCrash! And lots of their Poodle/ Spaniel/Lab mothers who are burnt out from having too many litters and often covered in mammary tumours and then dumped because their selfish owners can't make any more money out of them.

D0oinMeCleanin · 26/02/2015 13:47

Chihuahuas are not status dogs but people buy them as a fashion statement. They expect a cute little play thing that will sit in a handbag all day a la Paris Hilton, what they get is a big dog in small dog's body, with an ever bigger personality, often with a bad temper (from lack of proper socialisation and training) to boot.

I love all dogs but I have to question the sanity of a person who buys an unknown Akita/Husky/Rotty from someone they found on FB. I'm not saying those breeds are bad, I adore Akitas and would happily home one from a reputable rescue, but would I bring an unknown Akita, of unknown temperament into my home just because a stranger on FB told me the dog was nice? Not a chance.

Selling live pets on sites like this needs to be banned and the people who buy them need their heads checking, imho.

Debinaround · 26/02/2015 13:48

I don't think just because people pay a lot of money for a dog that it means they are going to be good owners Star

In the ops list of dogs for sale most of them were pedigrees which can go for hundreds of pounds. Like I said in my post my pils paid £400 for their chihuahua from some back street breeder so they are not cheap dogs.

I think the people getting slated are people who get a dog with no idea how much work is involved, how much money they cost then get rid of them as if they are nothing more than an old handbag.

Nobody slated labradoodle owners.

MagratsHair · 26/02/2015 14:22

Ah thanks Do0in, that makes more sense :)

Re prices the current list is this:

Chihuahua (6 months) £350
Another Chihuahua (7 months) £300
American Akita puppy (13 weeks old) £300
Yorkshire terrier puppy £300
Siberian husky (4.5 months) £400
Rotty (18 months) £200 ono
Staffy/springer cross puppies £150 each
Shar Pei puppy £850
American Bulldog puppy £350
Chihuahua puppy £250
Lurcher (9 months) free
Collie cross pup 9 months & Staffy 6 months £100 for both together
Biewer terrier puppy £650
Rottweiler pup 8 weeks old males £400 & females £450
Chocolate lab puppies £500 each

I rescued a cat from Cats Protection last October & she was £50, plus she was spayed, chipped & up to date with vaccs. Why on earth would you buy a dog from a Fb page when if you go to a shelter you get an idea of the animal's temperament & whether your home & family would be suitable! Plus they are cheaper from a shelter if money is an issue.

I don't understand it at all! I really don't :( :( are there fees that you pay if a shelter agrees to take your dog? Is this all about avoiding having to pay unnecessary money?

(the woman who bought the unidentified breed of dog, its an American Bulldog).

Plus there is a warning of someone selling puppies on the page who advertised their dogs as one breed when it turned out they were a banned breed of dog!

OP posts:
D0oinMeCleanin · 26/02/2015 14:48

A lot of people, mistakenly believe that rescue dogs are in rescue because there is something wrong with them, so they'd rather buy a dog. Oddly many of these people, who do not trust rescues to be professional, honest and open about their dogs, are the same people who think nothing of buying a 6 month old (insert large breed here) because the bloke in the free ads with the dodgy tattoos said it was a good dog but he's got a new girlfriend whose allergicConfused or they'll buy a puppy from the free ads because the bloke said the parents were both healthy and good natured.

EveDallas · 26/02/2015 15:03

Hello Dooin, nice to see you :)

OP, we got our lovely Mutt from Many Tears rescue and I'm as in love with her today as I was 5 years ago Smile. It breaks my heart to see how many they've got sitting in kennels or in Foster homes waiting for someone to love them.

Thankfully our local selling page won't take live animal ads any more, although the one a couple of miles further away will. I was pissed off leading up to Xmas with the woman selling 7 cross breed puppies (Llasa Apso something) and spamming the page daily. She started off in Oct and couldn't sell them - by the time she stopped (the pages banned her and changed the rules) the pups were 20 odd weeks, hadn't been vaccinated or socialised and she was posting things like "last chance to buy these beautiful puppies" - she didn't drop the price at all (around £350 I think), and you can bet your arse they ended up in Rescue...and she won't have given a shit.

Aeroflotgirl · 26/02/2015 15:07

It is very sad and disgusting. I would report the page, and Mabey contact your local RSPCA for advice.

Aeroflotgirl · 26/02/2015 15:10

I agree with everyone on here. I don't have a pet at all, but would like a dog in the future, so would go to The Dog Trust or RSPCA rescue not such pages or even breeders.

TheWitTank · 26/02/2015 16:24

Yanbu. I can't even look at the gumtree pets page for our area anymore, it makes me want to weep. Some people are arseholes.

We got our second dog from Battersea in December. She is the sweetest tempered, most placid animal ever. An absolute gem, everyone loves her. I would advise anyone to look at a rescue before buying a puppy, they are not all vicious boisterous monsters.
