To be feeling,upset and disappointed

I have been having a lot of pain from a large incisional hernia (from a c section) for over 15month's,Consultant is concerned about the hernia strangulating,as there are actually multiple small hernia/holes along the incision.

After waiting 6 months for referral to consultant and 3 months for operation,my surgery was scheduled for today.

I get to hospital, put gown on,do paperwork, cannula in,put on those fetching socks! Basically completely ready to go down to theatre. Then they tell me my operation has been cancelled. I know this can happen, more urgent emergency cases, rightly take priority. The annoying part is the reason for bed shortage, was wards were closed by norovirus. Even the nurse said they had know in advance. So why make me sit there for 6 hours, waiting for surgery that wasn't going to happen?

Also had consistently been told it would be a routine day case,as most hernia surgery now is. But have now been informed that after the Dr looked at my ct scan results,I will have to stay in a few days. With no explanation, told something showed up on scan! Couldn't speak to anyone, they didn't have any more information, just told to go home.

Oh that's rubbish, I'm so sorry for you ellie Flowers

that is sooooo frustrating for you Sad

FarFromAnyRoad · 24/02/2015 16:42

That really is crap for you. I find it hard to believe that they didn't at least have an inkling this could happen and that being the case they should just cancel you before you get there. Of course we all understand emergencies take priority but I think in this case they probably knew. Poor you - did they give you any idea when it might go ahead?

elliebooboo83 · 24/02/2015 17:08

One of the nurses said they knew really as they had already cancelled 20 operations for that morning! No idea on new date, told to wait by the phone as Dr wants it done urgently and there won't be time to write a letter. But his secretary thinks it could be weeks!
Just feeling sorry for myself! It's hard looking after 2 small children, when I am in constant pain, but hopefully will get another date soon.

That is awful I really feel for you.

I was having major surgery and was all gowned up ready to go when they came to tell me my op was cancelled as their backup generator had gone down. Obviously they couldn't foresee that but your case is entirely different!

Btw .. I went home opened a bottle of wine and got DH to take me out for a lovely meal Wine

PtolemysNeedle · 24/02/2015 17:21

I'm so sorry you are having to go through that, it's horrible. This is why the NHS needs major reform.

elliebooboo83 · 24/02/2015 17:31

Thank you for the support,it's cheering me up! cavkc that sounds like a great idea will suggest that to DH!

Second the Wine and have some Cake too for good measure.

Poor you op sounds blooming horrible and you build yourself up to operations so it's a huge deal when it's all cancelled.

Hugs

Ah OP, that's terrible.
I was supposed to have surgery tomorrow, but it got cancelled because I got a virus. I was disappointed but at least it was for the right reasons. So I can imagine how you are feeling.
