To not buy new outfits for DC for school disco?

Both my DC have plenty of nice clothes...they're 10 and 6 and the school disco is coming up. Usually I would buy them something new to wear but this month is SO tight it's not going to happen. I feel bad about it. I know I shouldn't...I just want MN to come and tell me I'm mad to consider buying new things for a school disco anyway!

It really doesn't matter. Let them wear some of the lovely clothes they already have, and they will have an absolutely fab time.

MiloCat · 23/02/2015 13:44

You're mad Grin. Of course they don't need anything new, especially as they have plenty.

Summerisle1 · 23/02/2015 13:45

YANBU. It's one night at a school disco. They'll rush around, get sweaty and spill drinks down themselves. Most importantly, nobody is going to be noticing whether they are in new clothes or just the nice clothes that they already own. It's not the red carpet at the Oscars!

MrsTawdry · 23/02/2015 13:46

I have such a terribly ingrained attitude about things like this and I KNOW it comes from my childhood where I didn't have much.

I always feel that my DC have to have new things for EVERY event. I am so irritated at myself!

I have boys, so maybe my opinion doesnt count, but I have never bought anything specially for a school disco.

DS1 went to his year 6 "prom" in shorts he found on his bedroom floor Grin

It's rather over the top buying for a disco. A wedding maybe if essential but a school disco no chance.

Summerisle1 · 23/02/2015 13:48

Tell yourself that this really isn't an event. It's just something happening after school. Because really, that's all the school disco is!

jeee · 23/02/2015 13:49

I can honestly say that the only time one of my dc had new clothes for a school disco is when I found a pair of pink glittery converses in a charity shop the day before the disco. I'd have bought them anyway, but whipped them out as a surprise on the night.

My children tend to spend the week or so before a disco going through their wardrobe and finding bizarre combinations unusual outfits to wear.

MrsTawdry · 23/02/2015 13:49

Lol...thanks everyone. I knew you'd all talk sense into me!

I'd be asking them to choose their clothes from their wardrobes then give them a bit to buy 'accessories' at Claire's. Great fun and the only proviso is that as long as they stay within budget you go along with their choices Grin

MrsTawdry · 23/02/2015 13:53

Yes Jacana I did think that...they can have something new for their hair.

I'm another one who wouldn't even have thought of buying new stuff just for a school disco! Don't worry, OP, they will have fun.

Cobain · 23/02/2015 13:55

I had to force myself off the pressure buying cycle (lack of stuff as a child) when I realised I was becoming the parent who then puts pressure on other parents to do the same. The same parents who made me feel cheap as a child with their children with the new stuff and making my handy me downs feel worse. It is so difficult when you want your children to have more then you and you forget they already have.

SaucyJack · 23/02/2015 14:10

YANBU. I'm another one who has a bee in her bonnet about buying new clothes for the DCs after a childhood of wearing hand me downs and various other crimes against polyester.

But if they already have a wardrobe full of decent stuff to choose from, then it's fine. They can only wear one outfit at a time.

Purplepoodle · 23/02/2015 16:02

My 6 year old just went in his combats and Spider-Man t shirt. It's only a disco.

Jacana · 23/02/2015 16:23

Crimes against polyester Grin

irregularegular · 23/02/2015 16:27

It would never, ever occur to me to buy a new outfit for the school disco

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 23/02/2015 16:33

See it as a chance to wear some of their lovely clothes!
I wouldn't ever have thought of buying new outfits for kiddies disco.
