to be afraid of the dark?

As an adult it gives me palpitations to be in a dark house. I can't sleep without the hall light on, I get too scared because clearly having the light on will prevent scary burglars entering the house

Yanbu.
I'm scared of the dark.

LongDistanceLove · 04/02/2015 18:53

YANBU, I sleep with the light and tv on as it seems to stop the racing thoughts I get.

I was very scared of the dark, into my teenage years. I found out later I have an anxiety disorder (several of them, in fact). I'm on medication for it, and no longer afraid of the dark (well, except of blundering into something in the dark, which happens to me a lot). Just something to think about.

It's hardly Unreasonable.
It's doesn't affect anyone else, who could you be seen as being unreasonable to, exactly?

PS Chat is a good place for threads.

Tisiphone · 04/02/2015 19:06

Well, obviously you're being unreasonable, OP - all that's there in the dark is the same stuff that's there with the light on, only you can't see it. But if it's not affecting your life, there's no reason to castigate yourself about it.

What I do always find surprising on Mn, though, is how many people say they are afraid to be alone in the house at night..)

YANBU
DH away last night so I didn't sleep, had to have the hall light on and kept imagining every little noise was someone moving around downstairs.
I am always like this when he's away even though I know his being home wouldn't make any difference if we were being robbed.
