To be a wooden toy convert

Until a couple of weeks ago, I would have dismissed wooden toys as being boring and uninspiring, noisy plastic toys all the way. I guess, I got into the habit of liking those, as those are the only things my dd who has ASD used to like when she was little, and were a life saver. Looking for birthday presents for my ds just turned 3, I looked on Amazon, and I coulden't contain myself of the selection of wooden toys. He goes to speech therapy as he has a severe speech delay, and the therapist had a few wooden toys that she used with him so I ordered about 5. When they arrived, they were fantastic, well made and ds loved them. Its lovely being able to use them with him. I think I will order a few more Smile. His speech is coming on.

The best toy I have ever found for children aged between 2 and 5 (and beyond) is a Brio wooden train set. Brio make other gorgeous wooden toys too and they last and last. Some of our Brio is 30 years old and going strong.

Plateofcrumbs · 30/01/2015 12:42

I cannot wait to get a Brio train set for myself DS.

JennyBlueWren · 30/01/2015 12:43

I'm not anti-plastic as I love Lego but also really love wooden toys; they feel so nice. Another vote for Brio also basic wooden blocks.

Our 30 year old Brio was my 40th birthday present!

Ds received a lovely wooden train set for Christmas and it was so lovely, though he is not interested at the moment, hopefully he will be when he is a bit older.

I love wooden toys, they tend to look less tacky and last longer IME

I have spent a fortune on Grimms wooden toys for my kids. They look beautiful on a shelf but my kids never play with them. I love them though, they are beautiful, the feel of them etc. everyone needs a wooden rainbow Grin

Best toy ever. It's become my standard first birthday present after my son received one for his. He stills plays with it now....6 years later!

This website is great for wooden toy porn.

Justabitoh · 30/01/2015 12:54

We love wooden toys.

I have two criteria for toys and it's led to getting rid of and eliminating a lot of toy related tat.

EITHER- wooden, natural and beautiful (reggio)

OR- realistic with real working parts, even if it is plastic, like Bruder vehicles (montessori)

Justabitoh · 30/01/2015 12:55

Babipur is a brilliant wooden toy website, great service too.

LaurieMarlow · 30/01/2015 12:59

I don't understand why people feel that wooden and plastic toys are somehow in separate camps.

There are intelligently made, nicely crafted toys that encourage good play. And there are less well made toys that disappoint. Sometimes plastic is the most appropriate material for the toy, sometimes it's nice to use wood (or indeed other substances).

Don't really understand why people present it as such a dichotomy.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 30/01/2015 13:01

I love wooden toys, they just look and feel so satisfying! Last for ages too. We've got our fair share of plastic tat in this house too but the wooden stuff has lasted whereas the plastic ones look tatty.

Aeroflotgirl · 30/01/2015 13:05

Storm I bought ds a car version of that. We have a mixture of plastic and wooden, does not have to be either or.

My little one absolutely loves the big train she got for her 2nd Birthday. It's a goki nature one. It's big enough to put her little people in too! I think my mum got it from onepurefox.co.uk. But I expect they sell them in other places too. I love the fact it is completely natural, looks gorgeous in the lounge so I don't mind if not put away in the evenings :)
