to take driving test without telling my instructor

I feel like he's rinsing me for extra lessons. I feel ready and confident. Should I simply book a test and take it in a not so familiar car?

i know my daughter just changed instructor because he seemed to be so ~SLOW
the new one (who a friend of hers passed with quickly) was shocked how she hadnt done certain stuff - and has pushed her much quicker and she now may put in for the test very soon.
i would suggest a change of instructor - get some reccommendations of an instructor you know someone else passed fast with - and book one lesson with them. see what they say?

Yes, have a lesson or two with a different instructor, one that's recommended, and ask their opinion. Otherwise, go for it!

I changed instructor, and he pointed out mirror use as a thing I needed to emphasise. Passed.

If you feel you are nearly there but not progressing quickly enough I would book an intensive course to get used to a car and the test route then take the test. You can choose how many hours you want.

When I took my test a few years ago, I needed my instructors 'code' to actually book the test so unsure if you can book without it......or if it slows the process down if you don't have it.

Ah yea I'm sure I need the instructor code. I'm trying to avoid booking further lessons. I've had lots and lots and I can't afford an intensive. I need to pass soon because of my job

But I also thought that you don't HAVE to have a driving instructor? You can learn with a friend etc therefore an instructor code would not be available

I booked a test on my own as I didn't have an instructor.

you don't need your instructors code, you can book without.

Although why don't you just tell him you feel ready? He can't force you to take more lessons, although it could be a difficult conversation if he's trying to squeeze more money from you!

DH gets quite a few pupils who have felt their instructor is fleecing them. One girl had done 20 hours and not even done a manoeuvre. Then those pupils tell their friends about DH.

There are instructors out there who this unfortunately. Agree try someone different who can assess you properly.

you need a car to take your test in. whose car would you use? that aside, if you feel ready, can't hurt to have a go!

I did my test without telling my instructor - I didn't particularly think he was taking me for a ride, I just though that the more people who knew the more nervous I'd be.

I DID have my own car though so had a familiar car to do my test in.

The only person who was in on it was DP as I needed someone to supervise me driving to the test centre!

I passed!

Then I felt really guilty when I rang my instructor to cancel my next lesson - I did book him for Pass Plus the week after though!

I went for lessons with a guy at a local driving school. I didn't feel he was much good but thought it was me being a starter rather than his lack of ability to teach. When I rang to book another lesson, his wife answered. She told me if I want someone to sit in the car and not do/say much, go to her husband, if I want to pass my test go to her. I went to her. She used to shout and poke me for the whole lesson but I did pass first time.
I would book the test but get the lend of someone's car and familiarise yourself with it before your test. Every car drives/works differently so don't just use a random car for the day of the test. Either way, it's good to experience it. If you google reviews of local driving instructors it may be a good indicator of their success rate. Good luck.
