to think wtf regarding sons detention

not the end of the world but still think wtf... my son was given a 30 min detention today because he was off ill some of last week and missed some maths. so he was given a detention. so hes punished for being ill... why did they not just say you have missed some maths so you need to do extra maths home work to catch up...

a few weeks back i got messages saying he had a dentention for missing a dentention so would have been an hour. he could not for the life of me know what it was for. so i chased it up no one could tell me what it was for so i said unless they can give me a reason hes not doing it.. as soon as they give me a reason then he can do it... turns out there was no dentention and it was an error..

i have also had postcards in the post saying how well hes doing... last week 'L' done really well we are very impressed ect he was not even in school that week....

YANBU they sound useless

wheresthelight · 19/01/2015 16:34

that is ridiculous and definitely needs to be taken up with the head of year

EvilTendency1 · 19/01/2015 16:36

I'd be complaining to the HOY as well Angry

HighwayDragon · 19/01/2015 16:46

Are you sure this is why? Was he given catch up work and not done it, hence the dt?

YouTheCat · 19/01/2015 16:49

Are they getting him confused with someone else?

ghostspirit · 19/01/2015 16:51

im going to. hes not overly upset or anything just bit peed off. but thats not the point... also he told me. the maths teacher said 'L' the reason your on detention is so you can catch up. i will help you... she never helped him. and also she was mid talking to him about something and another child interrupted so she went to see to that child and never came back.... i said to 'L' so did you catch up then. he said no. so cant even see what's been gained by it. and he said in the actual maths lesson. he had his hand up a few times and she just looks at him and ignores him. so i don't know if she just don't like my child or if maybe my son has it wrong and she just never sees him... don't know but im defo bringing the detention thing up

I'd have a word with the teacher if you are concerned. Right now you only have one side of the story!

IsChippyMintonExDirectory · 19/01/2015 17:22

Have you got confirmation from the school that his detention is a result of being ill? And did they tell you the first detention was an error?

If so write to the HOY and say the admin processes need to be slicker!

benfoldsfive · 19/01/2015 17:28

Yabu

The first detention sounds like an administration error.

The card saying how well he was doing came in the daily post not via specail next day delivery.

Your son need to take responsibility for his own education. Ask the teacher/friends/electronic learning what he had missed, what he needs to do to catch up. If they all say nothing or I can't help he wouldn't get a detention add he has shown willing especially if he approached the teacher.

If my Dd has been off sick she is expected to find the homework that was set in missed lessons and any hand outs. I expect her to ask her friends and the class teacher, she also has show my homework (electronic calander). I have made it clear this is her responsibility and if she doesn't do it, she can have a detention for every lesson.

When we are at work managing your our work load. I was off sick doesn't cut it.

ghostspirit · 19/01/2015 17:31

yeah the first one they said was in error but if i had not questioned it he would have gone...

no its just what my son told me. he told me what i wrote on my op. so i will contact them and ask them why he had a detention. i will just ask so tye do the talking first i wont accuse or anything. will simply ask them why...

i dont like the school anyway so i probably automatically think bad of them. The school is not run well. it was in the local paper about it becoming an academy and the head is going to be sacked... so it just kind of makes me think should i be surprised .

But as said i need to find out for sure first

I don't know obviously but my dc would get detention in this situation if they missed homework - if they are off ill it is up to them to go and check if there was any homework given in any lessons they missed. If they don't it counts the same as if they had been there and just not done it.
