...use 'lie' and 'lying' instead of 'lay' and 'laying'? If someone says, "I'm laying in bed", I want to ask him / her, "How many eggs are you planning?"

I lie in bed
I'm lying in bed
I lay in bed yesterday
I laid our dog to rest
I had lain in bed for ages

I lie to friends to get out of a date
I was lying to friends to get out of a date
I lied yesterday
I had lied to friends to get out of a date

Are people not taught any more?

I always use it correctly, but I can't say it annoys me. I know someone who shouts "different from " at the TV. As if they can hear him. Grin

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 11/01/2015 08:26

Round here they say 'led in bed'. It makes me twitch. YANBU

Shodan · 11/01/2015 08:46

YANBU.

And this is why I will never buy a bed from Layezee...

wowfudge · 11/01/2015 08:52

Ooh - I do the 'different from' shout! And I hate it when people say 'less' when they mean 'fewer'. DP did all these things, but has cottoned on to fewer being correct in situations where he would have said less in the past.

I think 'lay' is sometimes a dialect thing too. YADNBU. Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars' really irritates me because of it's use of 'lay'.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 11/01/2015 08:53

But your title is all wrong too!

In wishing - I wish
People should - people would

Andrewofgg · 11/01/2015 09:23

Different from, than, to, are all correct.

If someone says I laid in bed the answer is Who with and was it a good lay?

ChippingInLatteLover · 11/01/2015 09:28

Glass houses.

Azquilith · 11/01/2015 09:33

Would not should

Just saying

HappyAgainOneDay · 11/01/2015 15:21

Luis The question was AIBU... ...in wishing...

Andrew In the UK, the correct way is 'different from'. Americanese is 'different than'. 'To is relevant in 'similar to'.

I'll add 'compare with' here as well. It's not 'compare to'.

I'll acquiesce to the 'would' not 'should'. I'll put that down to a typo Grin.

Am I being unreasonable in wishing...

Nope

Am I being unreasonable to wish is better though Grin

I quite like the idea of laying eggs though.
