to not use my crystal champagne glasses?

My mother is staying for xmas/new year.
I have had a set of beautiful crystal port glasses my grandmother left me. I have had them since before she died 10 years ago. Since she has been here, 3 (yes bloody THREE) have been broken :(
We have opened a bottle of champagne for NYE. I have 2 absolutely beautiful crystal champagne glasses which were a wedding present (now divorced).
AIBU to hide them at the back of the cupboard and use my normal shitty tesco wine glasses for the champagne??

So you can definitely use the tesco ones for the reasons above

If she's broken three I would give her the cheapo ones.

I am currently using some glasses my Gran bought for my engagement 31 years ago, we luckily still have 5 and love using them regularily..they would be confiscated if they got down to two

Yes hide them. You will have to wash them up. The Tesco wine glasses will go in the dishwasher. Be sensible! Don't break anymore! Enjoy!

We have a number of beautiful glasses given to us by others but use the crap we buy ourselvesthis is primarily because we are clumsy arses rather than any issue with anyone else mind you.

Haha abu I was going to mention that we have one pink and one blue plastic flute which we used for some time.

Glasses that get used will eventually get broken in my experience. A fact of life.
Unless you are careful beyond measure to butler standards you will be unlikely to escape breakage, and there is no accounting for guests.

I have had many sets of champagne flutes, hand blown, beautiful wine glasses etc but they will all break eventually if used. The only glassware that will remain intact is the stuff well wrapped and placed in a sturdy sealed box and packed away.

Sorry if that's not the answer you want to hear.

I would have given her a tommee tippee after she broke the first glass. My dh isnt allowed to touch my fancy glasses, he turns into a ham fisted ape around crystal......

I think bigbluestars is right. Ok yes, your mum seems to be smashing them at some rate, but in my experience, they all go crash eventually....

I have a set of crystal wine glasses that were a wedding gift to my grandmother in 1893, 119 years ago, They are intact. They have never been used, they remain packaged and boxed in my loft. Left this way they may still be intact in another 100 years.

Meanwhile I have used and had broken perhaps 200 glasses of my own.

Yanbu. I've broken 6 of the crap ones in the last week and have a huge gash on my index finger. I'm just really glad that I didn't unwrap the waterford crystal ones which I found still packed in a box from when we moved house 2 years ago Blush

I got 12 champagne fluted as a wedding present 14 years ago. What was i thinking? who needs 12! I thought we'd be having cocktail parties every week!
All but two are broken, and I suspect they may have been sneaked in by dh as replacements.

However the 6 cheapo wine glasses I bought in ikea 15 years ago look as good as new. They are as thick as a jam jar to be fair.

I bet your grandmother's glasses are beautiful, bigbluestars, but it's a bit sad that nobody ever sees them. Breaking stuff is shit, but never having the pleasure is worse in most cases (obviously you may have perfectly reasonable and not sad reason to leave yours packaged - not a dig).

I do like to use them, because otherwise they are wasted. But yes these were a wedding present to my gran in the 1920's. She used them for special occasions, as do I.
I have had them 10 years and never broken any.
She managed to trip on the bottom stair and smash one to smithereens. One just shattered in her hand Hmm.
And I left one in the sink, when I went to work. When I came home she had cleaned up, and the glass was sat in the sink in pieces, she denied all knowledge Hmm.
They are really irreplaceable sentimentally, but would cost a fair bit too.
We used the cheap glasses. She did ask if I had any champagne glasses and I just muttered into my champagne!

my kitchen cupboard came off the wall...narrowly missing DC(6 mths and in bouncy chair)....everything smashed...all late MILs china, my Grandmas cut glass bowls...a long time ago now but could still cry when I think of it....took ages to clear up, a terrible mess...had to consol child first and get him to nap to even start cleaning up...but I found one very fragile cut glass champagne flute amazingly undamaged in amongst the piles of smashed/broken china/glass....that is now the only thing we have left of MILs/Grandparents so very precious...it is in secure high cabinet, where it can be seen but NOT used...

Surely beautiful things are to be used? What is the point otherwise? I use my mum's crystal glasses she got as a wedding present. But not when I know I'll really just want to chuck everything in the dishwasher.
