AIBU to complain

So today I went to take my son to nursery and it was closed for the week with no warning or letter, me and my husband always make quick chit chat with the staff and nobody told us verbally it was closed. I can understand bank holidays or Xmas/New Years eve but why today and tommorow? The biggest pain is we have to pay! £48.00 per day and I've had to book emergency annual leave from work that my boss still hasn't cleared so im worried about that now.

AIBU to make a complaint and refuse to pay?

It would be very unlikely for them to just close without notice. You need to be absolutely certain before complaining. If there weren't anybody there, then perhaps you did miss the communication. Do you know any of the other parents to check with them?

I would expect it to be closed between Xmas and new year, I think you should have checked first.

Check your contract as often they close between Christmas and New year as standard, although a reminder would be usual. Staff still have to be paid and the overheads. Presumably you also get paid holiday ?

Was there anyone else waiting? If not I think it's probably your mistake. DCs nursery always closes for the week between Christmas and New Year as standard. Do they have a newsletter/website that you can double check?

There were other parents there too this morning also saying they had no warning, they always put letters in my sons bag as he is 18 months old, we always get his bills and info if a bug is going round.

They work hard and deserve paid holiday Ofcourse but if it isn't a public holiday, my office (NHS hospital) doesn't completely close, we all negotiate annual leave hours instead.

My children's nursery is closed between Xmas and the new year. It is in the contract and they do put a sign up, but it's easy to miss.

Nothing on the website, we keep in touch via email and I have nothing in my emails. They were open 22nd and 23rd last week also.

Do you have a contact no. for the owner / manager in that case. Could they have ceased trading?

Little one doesn't go on Fridays, I'm wondering if this was when parents were told and They forgot to tell us? There wasn't a sign on the door this morning and there was nothing on the notice boards, I asked one of the ladies what she was doing over Xmas and she didn't mention it which leads me to believe she may have thought I already knew.

It's his first Christmas there so i don't know how they work or what hours are normal.

Does the nursery have a mobile number? The nursery manager at ours takes it home with her so can be contacted put of hours if necessary.

Our childcare place is always closed between Christmas and New Year - I thought it was standard. But they do put clear signs up for a long time in advance.
If there were other parents there expecting it to be open then I think you have cause to complain.
I'm not sure what you are suggesting you refuse to pay though.

How do you know they are closed tomorrow?

With DS nursery they did remind us with a note on the door but it was also in the contract that it always closed from Christmas Day to New Year's Day inclusive

Yes last week of the year my DD's nursery is closed. It's quite standard. It will be in the contract along with bank holidays..do check. Our nursery didn't really 'remind' us - similar to not reminding us about being closed on weekends or bank holidays (although some parents could be working these days).

Fairenuff That is an assumption which i have to make to cover my arse incase they are, it would be a little odd if they closed today, opened tommorow and then closed again.

I will mark it down to experience as i didnt want to kick up a fuss with them really as they are great with my son and he loves going there, i just have to make sure next time myself rather than hoping for a warning from them.

OP how do you know they are closed on the 31st?

Does sound odd we had a letter stating when they were closed though I had asked when they were closed when the Christmas rota went round work.
I would complain that you were given no notice but don't think you will get away with not paying. Is in our contact that we pay for holidays when they are shut.

You sound like you are trying to catch me out in something? I've been transparent with what has happened and admitted I am probably wrong in moaning as I should have assumed they would have been closed or checked with them ?
