Going to the cinema when you're sick

I'm probably being unreasonable but I find it seriously annoying when people go to the cinema while still in the coughing and sneezing stage of sickness.

The odd cough fine, the air con can set most people off or hey you might swallow some popcorn wrong. But listening to someone constantly cough and blow their nose throughout a film really ruins it for me.

Interested to know if it's just me? AIBU?

I find the general public to be quite revolting in any situation. Going to the cinema holds not pleasure for me. I wait for the dvd. YANBU.

I like to go to the cinema when a film has been out for a good couple of weeks.

Less busy a better choice of seats and hardly any noise disruption

It depends how they are sick, DS is asthmatic so coughs a lot so by your definition should never go to the cinema?

I was at a church service the other night where the parents of a norovirus virus ridden child didn't want them to miss the experience.

Vomited projectially 3 times on the floor of the church, parents wiped with baby wipes and then she vomited again , they moved her seats for a clean bit of floor . Vomit and baby wipes left on floor.

She had been ill all day but they didn't want her to miss it.

Selfish shits.

I agree it's a bit annoying and inconsiderate but nowhere near as bad as being ill or having a persistent cough and going to the theatre. For one, you're talking a ticket price of £20/40/60 instead of £7/10 for cinema and it's also much more annoying to miss a bit of dialogue in a play than most films.

Those parents with the sick kid in church behaved appallingly.

I sympathise helensburgh, DD and I were at Sunday School this morning where one of the children announced right at the end she had been sick earlier that morning, afted sitting in close contact with other children, sharing colouring pencils etc Angry. Thankfully this child wasn't actually sick in church but it beggars belief how some parents can be so fucking selfish and/or thick as to risk it with a child who was vomiting a couple of hours previously.

Agreed. Went to the theatre a couple of weeks ago to see a friend perform and I was so irritated at the amount of coughing going on. I don't know if it was the same couple of people or various different ones but I lost count of the amount of coughs. It must be kind of distracting and extremely irritating for the performers as well as the audience. A beautiful silent moment in the performance and then BOOM, some fucker coughs.

I've had plenty of coughs in my life and I've become very apt at holding them in when it would most inconsiderate to let one out iykwim. Quiet moments like the cinema/theatre or a serious moment. Either breathe through it and the urge goes away or drink some fucking water, not hard really. And if you really don't know how to hold it in stay at home and don't inflict the annoyance on other people Wink.

I once had a dreadful incident in the theatre when I started coughing (just random choking, not ill) and couldn't stop. I ended up sneaking out and coughed and coughed in the corridor. Felt awful

I tend to think that too many people are unable to see past their own selfish needs/desires to think of other people. Going anywhere busy when you're potentially contagious is just a shitty thing to do

You can ring most west end theatres if you're taken ill and ask to move your tickets to another day

I was seriously ill this year, had tickets to a show I couldn't use, they happily rearranged them for a future day and time all I had to do was post mine back recorded delivery and they sent the new ones out on receipt.

Not relevant but an FYI really Grin

I hate germy people in places they don't absolutely have to be. Going to the cinema's hardly a necessity, is it? Selfish and annoying.

I felt bad once when I went to the cinema and although I was over the very worst of a cold I had an annoying cough to deal with. One of those that when you start it's a twat to stop. I annoyed myself, I know I annoyed Dh and I probably annoyed everyone else in the cinema too Blush

Omg helen- they should be embarrassed of themselves. Not thinking of their neighbours at all. Why not take them out after first one. (But really i mean dont bring them) the poor child. The the others now getting sick.
I find i cough more when too hot.
Sometimes, say if you have organised childcare its the only time you can go.
Maybe they should bring cough medicine with them.

This happened thurs eve so I think my family are ok.

I'd estimate we were 5 metres away from first vomit and about 3 from second.

Such close proximity as well.

Poor girl, she must have felt awful.

Oh but they couldn't miss her putting a star on the church Xmas tree could they! Grre

If you have a cold, it's very selfish to go to the cinema.

Someone coughing may or may not have anything infectious.

YANBU. My family went to a carol service this evening. My sister has a bad cough and stayed away so she wouldn't ruin the occasion for people around her.
But even on threads here you can see how self absorbed and unaware of people around them some people are. I am often appalled at some of the things posters 'can't see why people get their knickers in a twist about this'.

I cancelled a trip to the cinema today because I have a stinky cold.

I do have a refluxy boy who vomits all the time though, and keep having to assure parents/school he's not actually sick. He throws up if he gets excited/sad/worried. Xmas Blush Tis quite a pain.

My DS has cystic Fibrosis, he has a really fruity cough, always.

I'll remind him not to leave the house again incase he pisses anyone off. Hmm

Sorry, it's a touchy subject, of course you shouldn't go about infecting people if you have general coughs/colds and bugs.

On another note, I was in a fast food place the other week, there were 2 women with a young girl, she must have been about 6 but not at school.
They sat there and ate a huge chicken and fries/drink meal while she threw up into a takeaway cup before it overflowed onto the table.

They got up, moved seats and continued eating, ignoring this poor child and the person who was mopping up her vomit. AngrySad
