There's someone I know that claims they are an eco warrior. They use their bike a lot, recycle, go on about washing at 30 degrees, never taking a supermarket bag and buying a bag made of recycled crisp packets from homeless people in Peru.

At the same time, they eat ready meals (and are obsessive about recycling the plastic) buy new apple products every year, heat the house so they can wear a T-shirt in the winter and installed air con for the summer. They also used to be very anti cars, until they were given one...

I just smile through their eco rants, would it be rude to tell them they are very hypocritical?

If they're truly being a hectoring evangelical arse, say "Interesting....tell me how you feel about the impact on the environment of manufacturing ready meals/turning your thermometer down and insulating your house/the reliance on air con/not making do and mend over buying brand new on a whim?'

Or do what I would do and say 'How's living in a greenhouse going, worried at all about the effect your inability to wear a jumper is having on future generations?'

Evangelisers (is that a word?) annoy me. The are often hypocritical, self unaware and always very dull.

I used to work with one of these people, I just laughed to myself when she went on about getting reusable nappies to save the environment while they have 2 Land Rover type cars sat in their drive and my DH and I share 1 zero road tax, low emission type car (not that I ever claimed to be an eco warrior). Until of course she gave me a lecture on using disposable nappies, then I pointed out the facts... She was not best pleased

I call them EGO warriors though.

They always preach about what others should be doing but never actually do anything themselves. They go on marches telling people to do this and that but they never put their money where their mouth is.

I had a long issue with a local self styled ego warrior who asked us [as in our community garden] for spare food so that he could arrange a 'free meal' and he then invited all his mates to it. I went ballistic and I have never spoken to him again. Apparently I was mean as I made him cry. And to top it all, once I outed the arrangement hardly anyone turned up. Literally eating off the efforts of volunteers and other people's work. The stupid thing was he was doing it as a local Friend's of the Earth rep, and all the other community gardens just handed over their spare food without even questioning it.

So I am totally with you here, you have to call them out on it. Every time.

I usually say 'Oh if you are interested in organic food growing, we have a garden you can come and volunteer in to grow your own organic food for free' and we never hear from them.

Twats. They just do it to make themselves look good.

Could you say "so all this peruvian recyled bag shit, is that to offset your total buggerisation of the planet because you are a lazy consumer with a technology addiction and princeling tendencies when it comes to being the exact perfect temperature in your own home?"

I feel the same about people who harp on about the environment and then have a real Christmas tree which ends up at the dump=hypocrite

I'm seeing a new type person these days, part of Trustafarian, part Green, usually a bit posh and usually fairly well off. Yet somehow they've managed to turn what they call eco-consciousness into a whole new level of blagging, basically. They do the sort of thing the OP is quite rightly NBU about and then pop some Tassimo pods into the Food Bank on the way home, patting themselves on the back.
You're right to be irked but if I were you I'd say nothing, it's almost never worth it, they have all the excuses in the world already worked out and while I don't think you'd be in the least bit rude calling them on it, it won't get you anywhere.

YANBU. I used to be connected to one on social media. They once posted a long diatribe about how all people really need from their mobile phones is the ability to make calls and texts and it's so bad for the environment that people regularly upgrade just to get new features - keep your old phone and save the planet, etc. Unfortunately for him, the site in question tagged the post as having been submitted from the latest smart phone model!
