I never have and never will hand someone a Christmas card!

So I dutifully write cards every year to DH's family that we rarely see, and I try to include a few lines about our DC and not just sign our names. But I totally fail to see the point in handing a card with nothing more than To......, From.......... in it, to someone you are face to face with, nor do I have the time! Why not just say it? I met with friends at a soft play and the first thing they did was get cards out and hand them to each other, it's not really Eco friendly is it? that's my excuse

OP you are either miserable or tight. Why will you not give Christmas cards to people you see on a daily basis? Do you think that the fact you see them is sufficient? Or do you think you only send Christmas cards to people you don't see?

Hmm I'm not tight (I buy very nice charity cards) so guess I must be miserable! Yes, I only buy cards for people I don't see :)

I just carry them around in my bag and forget to give them out.

There are no rights or wrongs: do what makes you, and other people happy. My dh is the same as you, but makes up for it in other thoughtful ways; my mum is the complete opposite and gives/sends cards to anyone and everyone she has ever met (including every dustman on their dustround - and chocolates for the dustmen's kids/grandkids!) Enjoy Christmas and spread a bit of joy however you want.

I think the postage charges may stop me posting cards, but hand delivered are ok.
However it's cold tonight for delivering them. I'll deliver them tomorrow in the sun

YANBU, I totally agree with you. To me, Christmas cards are for people you won't see around Christmas time to say "Merry Christmas" to. Drives me especially mad when the in-laws post us Christmas cards ... c'mon, you're actually going to SEE US on Christmas day, we do not need a card!!!

Just been to a party where everyone turned up and swapped Xmas cards. I knew they would and didn't succumb to it. Totally stupid and pointless. I've taken the decision that sitting out and writing cards to people I see face to face is not something I'm going to bother my life with. impersonal, Clinton cards tat. I also wish people would stop giving them to me - gaudy, glittery and vile - they go straight in the recycling.

It always baffles me when I receive a Christmas card from someone I rarely see who then gives me a whole spiel about their amazing children and their wonderful year. So you couldn't be bothered having an actual two way conversation with me all year, but now you want to brag about your wonderful life (which is never as amazing in reality as it is in the Christmas card).

Okay... So on that basis OP would you not give a birthday card to someone you see on their birthday?

It doesn't really leave a lot if some people don't want to give a card to someone they see and other people don't want to give cards to people they don't see! Does it matter? Do what you want and leave other people to do what they want- I can't see why it is turned into 'right' or 'wrong'.

Christmas brings out the worst in some people. I can't see how me handing a card to someone who is happy to have it should irritate bystanders so much!

Nope, no cards here, ever. My mum gets really narky about it, but we make the effort to speak to everyone we want to wish a happy christmas, with visits, phone, email or Skype it's a nicer way to find out what they've been up to and a better use of my time than writing cards to people I may not have seen for 4/5 years. But each to their own, for some people writing and receiving cards makes them happy, for me it's a chore.

I'm from Germany and you don't hand out cards to everyone you see on a daily basis. Cards are sent to people you don't see often and a few lines are always included, not just 'to' and 'from'.

I don't give cards to those who I see frequently, as I'd be getting them a present (if family/close friends).

DH's family give cards to everyone all even when they're seeing them and giving them presents. It always strikes me as weird. I've been 'told off' by MIL for being stingy, but I've never criticised her family for having a different tradition.

MIL btw is currently trying to cut down her card list, and sees no irony in what she says about card giving habits now compared to things she said before.

Mine gets called a Bin Man and does a Bin Round. He's called a Bastard Bin man sometimes too when I can't turn into my drive because he's abandoned the bin in the middle but that's a whole new thread.
On the subject of christmas cards, I only really send them to family and close friends and i can't stand the cards that contain a long letter telling you all the families achievements for the year. How their wonderful little darlings won the class prize etc, I always think Why? Is any one but you really interested?

Well, I freely admit I have massively cut down my card list this year due to postage costs. So cards have only gone to those I know expect them (family) or who would be a bit annoyed if they did not get them (family again). It was brilliant. I only sent about 30, instead of double that. I rarely do the handover to people I actually see, because I am lazy.

YANBU. Neither are people who do give out cards I suppose, though the whole card theing seems a pointless expense to me. I don't think they look nice displayed, either, but a bit messy!

YABU - I give cards to my son who I see every day, and I write a little bit about the past year in them so that he will have them all to look at when he's older. I write cards to my parents because my son draws pictures in them which they love to have and keep. I write a Christmas card to my husband because we have an ongoing competition as to who can find the tackiest and oddest card with husband/wife on it, and we write soppy things in them that we probably wouldn't say to each other on the day when surrounded by family. I don't see how it harms anyone else.
