iPads at school plays

AIBU to find people filming school plays through iPads selfish? I went to DS's nursery nativity today and watched most of it through a bunch of screens. DS ended up crying because he couldn't see us.

I am going out tonight but will return later on.

We have requested that parents do not film using their iPads at our KS1 Christmas Play this year. Just isn't fair on those behind you, or the children.

I have NOT given you permission to film my child and out it on god knows what site on the internet.

It causes reall stress and worry for parents of adopted children.

Funnily enough I was at a concert my DD was incolved in earlier, had my ipad in my bag and was so tempted to record just a little bit for DH to share in.
I didn't. Because I don't like it either.
What do they call it? Memory dumping? Not actually experiencing the moment you're in, but recording it.

It goes to show though - there might be a money making opportunity there for PTAs to record and sell.
So long as everyone is consenting.

We are not allowed to record or take photos but we can buy the DVD and the professional photos! Total rip off.

This simply shouldn't be allowed IMO, for safeguarding reasons, but YANBU. It's bloody anti social.

I do t mind it IF they stand at the back or one sided of the room. I do mind when I'm trying to see the stage and all I can see is a bloody screen (happened in DS nativity this week). much easier if the school filmed them and sold to the parents (and banned phones, pads ect)

There were several (4+) at the front and I couldn't get to them all to ask them to lower them without being quite disruptive.

DH told me to wave to DS (when he started getting upset) and I said that I couldn't see him, I could only see iPads. At least two of them would have heard me but they didn't lower them.

I may ask if they would consider banning them after New Year, it seems a bit sour to raise it so soon afterwards.

We don't allow filming or photography anymore. We have a professional videographer doing the job (one of the parents, so he doesn't actually charge for the job), and then sit down to watch the edited video as a whole staff to make sure no one is in it that can't be filmed. It's then sold for $10AUD (about 5 pounds) so not overly expensive, and you get a professionally edited video to keep, and you can actually sit back to enjoy the concert and not watch it through a screen, and the school covers the costs. We also have a photo backdrop set up after the show, and parents can go crazy and take their own photos of their child with the backdrop afterwards. No valid reason for any form of filming during our shows.

It's a fact of life that parents want to video and take photos, it's just the way of the world now. Schools need to make it easy for parents to not only get what they want, but also not become public nuisances while they are getting it. If no video/photos are provided by the school, then parents will take matters in to their own hands, and everyone else be damned.

Huge bug bear of mine too, why can't people just enjoy the moment. It's obvious that it's all for FB they have to be seen to be having fun. Basically, if it's not on FB, it didn't happen. My general rule is one or two quick pics then nothing more.

This drives me mad. Went to DS nativity this week at his nursery. The kids are all only 2 years old and several burst into tears when all the parents starting standing up with the flashes going off on the Nikon cameras and the iPads and iPhones etc. I couldn't see a thing so missed DS completely. People in the first couple of rows were standing up to film completely blocking everyone behind.
DS is next at nursery on Monday and I am going to be suggesting that next year they restrict the amount of family members that can come per performance. The row in front of me was filled by 8 adults for 1 child so it was so overcrowded.

PTA have banned all recording of nativity this year due to ipad blocking. 6th formers doing a media project at the feeder high school are filming instead and selling a DVD (all for school profit) for not much money. I think it's a great idea, though not sure how brilliant the quality will be, I'll be happy to actual watch it free of waving screens.
