To be irritated that my DH is so reliant on a satnav

Even just on short local journeys that he should know as he drives them often enough he insists on using it. He is completely and utterly reliant on it and it drives me nuts!

We're currently driving back South after a weekend away and the journey is pretty simple M1, M25, M3 then home. I fell asleep (up a lot of the night with DS, hence why I'm not driving) and wake up to find we've missed the M25 junction and we are merrily driving towards Brent Cross. Apparently he didn't see the M25 junction and it's not his fault because we didn't have the satnav on .

We've now added another half hour on to an already long journey!

If he's driving, it should be his choice. Don't see the problem.

I always have the sat nav on, even for journeys I know well. I like to know my ETA. It tells me if there's any hold-ups en route and...just because it pleases me

I think I agree, why do people use it for journeys they do every day?

I have the same problem with DH. I don't get to sleep in the car, ever.

When DS was small we ended up driving to Spain, I had to navigate all the first day whilst DH drove. The next morning, he made me drive while he slept. Then he moaned because I woke him up near the border to get the passports out!

I have a complete mental block when it comes to routes and often need sat nav for most routes, including familiar ones and those around my own town. So, if your DH is anything like me, YADBU. Did you say he couldn't use sat nav today?

Yes he's driving as I felt too tired to drive and didn't think I would be safe. To be honest I wouldn't have minded him having the sat nav on but he didn't set it up before we left and it's such a simple journey that it didn't cross my mind that he needed it!

I sometimes use it for familiar journeys, especially longer ones, so it tells me of any traffic delays. I tend to switch the sound off though.

Yabvu if he is driving it's his choice. I can't map read for toffee, so sat nav would be ideal if I drove.

Why does it matter? when we first got our satnav we used it on journeys we knew well so that we could evaluate how accurate it was. I don't use it on journeys where I know the route, but I still use it for journeys into the unknown.

I know of a couple who used their new satnav to go to a wedding but tapped in the address of the printers whose imprint was on the invitation . . . I would like to have heard the row which followed.

I think you're just irritated with him because he "missed" the turning for the M25 (wtf?) and quite rightly so!

How can anyone in charge of a car and driving it safely miss a major motorway interchange?

I use mine all the time (without sound as it drives me potty). I use it to get to work as the traffic can be horrendous and satnav tells me the quickest way. I use it when driving somewhere new as despite being a very competent map reader, I cannot safely read a map while driving and I don't want to have to keep pulling over.

Quite easily. I do a lot of motorway driving and the other weekend I missed our junction because I was talking to DD and not paying attention to which junction we were at. I was paying attention to the road and the traffic though (before I get flamed)

Yes Mintyy definitely irritated he missed the junction. Apparently he can't remember road names and didn't know the M25 was the motorway we needed so didn't come off on it.

I can completely understand using a sat nav for places you've never driven to before but this journey is one we have done before and he uses it for local journeys that he's been driving for years!

We don't own a sat-nav. We have a UK and a local roadmap in the car. We tend to plan our journeys on-line so we know roughly which major routes we need to take and then might print out smaller final destination maps if necessary. We've not had any problems yet.

My DH uses his sat avy every day for his journey to work etc so he can go around the traffic, if you have the tools why would you not use them?

He only uses it on short local journeys when timing or traffic may be an issue, but then he is very good at directions etc.

I am hopeless with directions (worst is coming up out of a tube station) but don't have satnav, well I do but only on my phone so I only use it when I need to, for most of my journeys if I have been there before I can get there again and in general traffic is not an issue.

Long journeys I'd take the car with sat nav and it would be on even if I knew the way especially on a motorway as it is easy to miss the junction.

Yes I am a competent driver and was a sales rep pre sat nav in and around london.

I've driven all over England in my day, visiting prisons in places I'd never been to before. I have a perfectly useful road atlas, updated each year and I'd consult it before setting off, memorising the route, or if necessary jotting down the junctions, road numbers etc. I never got lost. What's hard about that?

My dh wanted a sat-nav soooo badly I got him one last year. The bloody thing makes me twitch. That oh-so patient, silky voice saying "When safe to do so, turn around..." We used it to navigate around a market town near us, just to try it out. I'm being totally truthful when I say we drove past Halford's FIVE times. And she announced "You have reached your destination" outside a little railway station used for restored steam trains. Were we heading there? No.
But my dh adores 'technology' so I keep my mouth shut. I've noticed though that the darned thing is now sitting in its box in the cupboard. Ha!

Anyone recommend a super basic easy to use Satnav?

I have TomTom, coming, it's very good and easy to use.

OP... he's driving so it's his choice. Some people use satnav to warn of speed cameras, that's incredibly useful.
