To put a shelf up on a Sunday afternoon?

Because my neighbour in the flat below obviously thinks so. She's banging on the ceiling.

When should we put up a shelf?

Shouldn't we ever put up a shelf?

She's retired so there's no window when she's out...she never leaves the house apart from once on a Friday afternoon for a coffee with next door neighbour. For half an hour and that's when DH is at work anyway.

Are we really being unreasonable? I know drills sound awful....but it's not bedtime and it's not very early...

Ignore her, she is being ridiculous!

I find this sort of behaviour so worrying and upsetting. It's harassment really.

Ignore her. It's not harassment, just a woman being ridiculous. Go down and ask what the problem is.

Meh. I think next door are having their house rewired. They have been drilling since 9am and it is loud enough to drown out all conversation and the TV.

I would be more tolerant if the neighbours had actually moved in and were also having to live with the noise but they haven't.

I've not said or done anything though. Other than mutter "FFS stop!" under my breath and plan some hideously loud party and DIY session for when they move in (not really)

I know it's a horrid noise...hate it myself...but she's chosen to live in a ground floor flat! The council offered her a bungalow in a place that was just down the road and has a warden and lovely gardens but no...she wanted to stay here....which fair enough...it's her home...but she kind of needs to accept then that families are living above her and always will be because these are part of a housing association!

Sorry, just realised I contradicted myself. You can't ignore her and ask what the problem is! I think going down and seeing what's wrong would be best. You won't feel as confused if you ask why she's banging. She might be hanging a picture, or a mirror on her bedroom ceiling.

Perhaps I could just put a "mix tape"* on really loud and go out for the evening. :)

Conveniently, my brother does look like he could have been inside for GBH despite being as soft as a soft thing so that is an option!

Clawhands, I would just ignore her and get on with it. It's a shelf - four holes or so and the job is done. There are no restrictions on Sunday DIY (I checked earlier today, dammit!) other than normal noise pollution ones and a shelf would not contravene these.

Seriously a family member had a neighbour like this - stressed her out no end banging everytime they moved in the house.

Except one time she was banging for hours and she had fallen over - they ignored her - until they heard a faint 'help!' and went round and found her.

Her son was putting a new lampshade up.

Well you know those lampshades. If they Go Bad there's no accounting for their desire to bang on the ceiling.

I think she meant a ceiling shade...you know..

I'd still have thought that was more of a screwing than a banging though.

Screwing, banging, what's the difference . . . both good on a Sunday afternoon as long as you don't disturb the neighbours.
