So much that is written for children these days seems to be in block capitals. It's not how we generally write as adults and it's not how we learn. I am noticing it more and more, maybe because it gets up my nose!

I can't think of a single thing my children own that is in capitals.

Just bought a spelling app for my daughter's tablet. All block caps. Also there are signs up in infants play area at her school. It just makes it harder for her to learn to read IMO.

What are block capitals? Is that the same as capitals?

Mardy - I guess so - it's just how I've always expressed words that are all in caps as opposed to having the appropriate capitalisation. I just get frustrated as my daughter has struggled to find her feet with reading and writing, and I think as kids tend to learn lower case letters to begin with it is daft.

I was looking for an alphabet puzzle for my 3 year old, there were more in upper case than lower case. I just don't understand why they would do this when at the age of using wooden puzzles they only know lower case.

i learnt caps first. maybe the toy makers did too?

YABU. Young children learn to recognise letters in a variety of formations, including upper and lower case and font type. You'll notice in lots of quality literature (Mini Grey, Lauren Child, for two well known examples) this is explored.

Just because her environment shows her lots of letters in capitals does not mean she'll be taught only capitals, it does mean however that she'll recognise them in the future.

I work in early years and this pisses me off too
So many 'educational' toys are not so educational as they are in capital letters. I'm thinking jigsaws and alphabet books
A lot of them are American. So that does explain a lot.
Children should recognise lower case letters first except for the letter that starts their name and when they learn to write it should be in lower case too
