to not take a buggy on holiday?

DS will be 18mo in March when we go on our first ski holiday since his birth. Childcare for him is in the same building we're staying in. We take our own skis and boots.
I'm thinking that putting ds in the backpack would be far easier for getting around, the only disadvantage I can see is that we wont' have the buggy for naps but I guess this would only be applicable on the traveling days and maybe the one night we don't have chalet catering.

Will the backpack I can pull a wheely bag and dh can pull the other bag and carry the skis.
With a buggy I guess I'd have to try to fit our clothes in a rucksack so we only have one wheely bag. And on the flight the buggy would get all confused in with the skis and be a nightmare to find at pickup.
In resort there might be snow on the ground anyway.

Am I mad and totally unreasonable to choose the ds in backpack option????

Its always a tricky decision. I've done buggyless but with a slightly younger child, and was really glad I did it.

Best tip I ever got on here, is to buy a cheap Mothercare one, it doesn't matter if it gets thrashed by handling staff, it is handy for the evenings and you can leave it behind you.

If there is snow/ice on the ground you fun the risk of slipping on your back and injuring your baby.
Is it an option to leave him at home with a family member?

I can push a buggy and pull a wheeled suitcase. Assuming you have a buggy you can push one handed, give it a try. I think in a catered ski chalet with child care on site you will find it easy to manage without a buggy though.

The Quinny zap folds up small enough to go on as hand luggage (you can get a bag to put it in), which might help.

I'd take a backpack over a cheap buggy or the quinny zapp (which we had as a travel buggy) because in snow their wheels will be shit.

Hmmm. Well I'm certainly not buying a Quinny for the sake of a week.
And really don't want to leave him at home. I'm not ready at all to be away from him for a week and am looking forward to showing him the snow and sledging etc.

agree with mum of2 i'd want it for the airport, also helps you get through security quicker :) also what time is your flight? depending ho you are flying with both mark warner and esprit have helped us with our bags before when we have had babies.

If you think you'll miss the buggy on the night the chalet staff are off, could you not order takeaway/delivery and eat in the chalet? That way your DS could go to bed as normal.

On our last flight the buggies were folded up at the stairs to the plane and loaded last, they were then unloaded by the time we got down the stairs, so weren't checked in with the luggage. Plus it meant we had the buggy right up to the plane, which was handy for keeping DD contained during the wait. Would you need to put the backpack in the hold at check in?

Regarding cases, DH and I have the rolling ones with 4 wheels, they're much easier to push one handed so one person can easily push two (although obviously not in snow!). DH had the two cases and I had DD, buggy & hand luggage.

Airports involved are both regional. So not huge.
I guess it'd be most use for the airport waiting. IF he'd be happy to sit in it in the airport.

I'll just be annoyed if it spends all week folded in the hallway never used.

When we've flown before the buggy has been put in the hold at the steps but then we needed to get it off the baggage reclaim inside at the other end. Hmm.
I'm assuming that they won't make us check a backpack in if ds is in it. Will they? It goes totally flat when he's not in it and would go in an overhead locker easily.

Maybe I need another thread - anybody taken a baby backpack on s plane before??

Standard buggies are pretty much useless in a ski resort. I wouldn't bother taking it unless you really think you will need it in the airport (which you probably won't as it sounds like you are taking a carrier).
If you have childcare where you are staying they will almost certainly have their own snow-proof buggies which they use during the day (at least in my experience) and you may be able to borrow one in the evening/when they are not in use. Also, you can rent various child sledges (including with harnesses) which may be fun/more practical. Otherwise a bit of toddling and a bit of carrying should work and there are always the ski buses if you want to go a bit further.

I don't know about taking a backpack on a plane and whether you would have to check it in but I have taken my then 22 month old on a plane in a
Boba 3g which is a bit less structured than a backpack. No need to check it in, didn't even count as my hand luggage, it was treated as part of my clothing. I appreciate that you probably wouldn't want to buy something like that just for a one off holiday but my local sling library hires these and other similar styles for £5 for 2 weeks so could be worth investigating if you find out that you do have to check in the backpack.

You won't need to check a back pack you're carrying a toddler in, no. We've done it a few times. Some airports you would get the buggy back at the plane, some not until the baggage belt.
