To hate swearing in songs?

Firstly I'm not a prude. I adore a good old swear when required and it's definitely necessary at times! However I cannot stand it in pop songs.

I love Cheryl F-Vs song I Don't Care but the non-dubbed version sounds ridiculous when she swears in it. It's just so unnecessary and I get the feeling it's done to shock people rather than make a good song. Pink does it too, and I can't listen to Eminem either for the same reasons. The versions where the words are dubbed out sound weird and slightly irritating.

Should I take the stick out my bum and get over it or am I not alone in feeling this?

I dunno. I prefer the sweary version of Creep.

And it amuses me, the number of songs where something has been faded out and the word is something as innocuous as ass.

The radio version of Creep is just not as good

i have to be careful what ds listens to he knows some songs have too many bad words and only adults can listen to them

I agree. I can't listen to a whole load of songs in front of my DCs because of this.

I also swear like a trooper but I don't want to hear swearing when I'm listening to music. It's unnecessary.

I'm with you, in particular with Cheryl's new song where the swearing is totally unnecessary, only I can't stand the song, with or without the swearing!

I like Eminem so I think it's obvious what I think

I think it works in some songs. I love the sweary version of Creep and the Pink one - I think it's called Perfect - so much more powerful with the swearing. BUT I hated the sweary version of Don't marry her. It just seemed unnecessary and gratuitous.

I am happy to hear swearing in songs when it sounds genuine (Creep, for example). The worst example is James Blunt Beautiful where he says 'I was fucking high' in that ridiculous high voice sounding about 12 - just sounds embarrassing.

Nothing constructive to add but I now have a burning desire to listen to "Fucking Hostile" by Pantera. I do love a good shouty swear

Totally agree - John Grant - Chickenbones - perfect song, but can never playing it when children are around & have to stop self singing it, even when I really want to quite a lot!

Long car trip recently DH & I were constantly leaping onto radio (iPod plugged into it) to skip to next 'suitable' song. Really need to clean up my playlist

We've had to delete most of DH's Weezer album from the memory stick we use in the car. Not so much the sweariness as the subject matter!

I did leave a particular Verve track running with DS1 around, recently - he's 10 so it's not like he's never heard any swearing. He kindly beeped out all the fuck yous at the end, for me :o There's a few dodgy ones found their way onto his mp3 player, too, simply because they're in the middle of compilation albums. I tried not to snigger at him singing along to Gay Bar. It was almost as bizarre as him singing along to Lithium, when that was played on the radio, a few years ago.

Don't think you're being unreasonable at all. It really irritates me in songs when it's completely unnecessary, like when there is a perfectly good edited version available (Like Cheryl's) My DS2 always downloads the explicit version and plays them at full volume, and then sings them at inappropriate times because he thinks they're "cool"

I read about it in a list of best use of brackets in song titles.

I am not usually bothered by the swearing, but when the idea of a "radio edit" is to cut the word out and replace it with silence it really annoys me. (Although.. Silence would be preferable to the whole of Pharrel's rap in Blurred lines)

One of my favourite songs is 'Fuck Her Gently' by Tenacious D, but I only ever listen to it with my headphones on.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The Pink Floyd song "Lost For Words" contains a swear, once. It fits, no bother. The same swear word turns up repeatedly in a re-recorded version of "Living Next Door to Alice " by Smokie and it just isn't funny. It's utterly out of context and inappropriate.
