Am I, or have these people on the train just been seriously rude?

Rush hour, I get on train and plonk my bag on an empty unreserved seat, ready to take coat off and sit down. Next to seat sits a perhaps 14 year old lad, on a reserved seat. Across the aisle his mum and dad, opposite me his teenage sister. Just as I want to sit down (my stuff already there), dad shouts to son, move on that seat, yours is reserved from here. I look perplexed (no other seats available) and say, ahem, no? I sit here. Dad shouts: he was sitting there a minute ago (he wasn't when train pulled in!). I'm trying to think of something to say, dad gets out of seat and approaches me as if he's going to either thump or manhandle me and says, you move! I get seriously pissed off and sit down, saying "ABSOLUTELY not". Kid laughs and put his reserved ticket on my seat, and says, now you are in the reserved seat. I smile mildly and explain about seat numbers. Now he's sittin opposite me, in an also reserved seat (he was lucky, they didn't come) and the whole family glares at me. Kid keeps mentioning "bad smell"I've got an hour on this train, very unpleasant. Mainly I'm shocked, am woman in mid 40s. WIBU?

Gosh how rude of them! Has anyone else reacted?

Cross for you x

Littlef00t · 24/10/2014 17:54

Unless the seat was reserved, you had every right to fight for the seat as he did.

Last train home of the week, presumably seats in short supply, I'd have probably done the same.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/10/2014 17:54

Was the seat reserved as his and he just popped over to see them? Confused

Is he now standing ?

alemci · 24/10/2014 17:54

no you poor thing. they sound very rude and uncouth. dad is very childish and sending the wrong message to his son. can you just totally ignore them?

SophiaPetrillo · 24/10/2014 17:54

Just to clarify, they're telling you that you can't sit in an available, unreserved seat and are trying to pretend that THEY reserved it and you've pinched it? If you feel intimidated, get a guard, they can radio to the transport police if you're in fear of being assaulted or anything like that.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 24/10/2014 17:56

Stay calm and ignore the arses and if they become more aggressive call for a guard.

sonjadog · 24/10/2014 17:59

Glad you didn't give in. People like this piss me off. In my younger years I would have given in but these days I just can't put up with crap like this.

sonjadog · 24/10/2014 18:00

I see you are still there. What would I do? Turn music on my headphones, look out the window, and ignore.

helzapoppin2 · 24/10/2014 18:05

They were wrong on many levels, and very disrespectful to you. I think that is what sounds bad. The father seemed to be encouraging his son to be rude to you rather than setting him a good example. How awful!

deadduck · 24/10/2014 18:06

Phew, thanks for the replies. I was seriously worried I might have been unreasonable. No, they had no reserved seats at all. Neither did I, total free for all. He just very unfortunately for him that he didn't look and sat in a reserved one and wanted to claim mine before he's had to give up his.Quite frankly, shocking parenting. The kid is smirking at me because he knows mum and dad have his back. They should all be ashamed of each other! And no, he is now not standing- he pinched a different reserved seat who's owner didn't show up.

SophiaPetrillo · 24/10/2014 18:08

Glad you're OK. So long as they don't say or do anything else, just be proud of yourself that you didn't give in to their nonsense and try and rise above their shite and ignore them.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/10/2014 18:11

They had no reserved seats at all Shock

So they pinched reserved seats that weren't there's?

And then got arsey when you sat in an unreserved one ? - what weirdos

MaidOfStars · 24/10/2014 18:11

Boy sitting in seat reserved NOT for him or family. OP bags an unreserved seat. Dad then tells boy to move to OPs seat as the one he is sitting in might have to be given up to the person who reserved it. Boy puts reserved ticket on OPs seat so anyone claiming will move her, not him. Fortunately, reserved of seat doesn't show, so all seats free.

OP, they are dicks. Smile, nod, then ignore.

Wow, how do you get that objectionable? Well done you.

deadduck · 24/10/2014 18:13

Thanks, Sophia, I'm getting childish satisfaction out of telling you all, whilst they keep smiling and smirking. Oh well, nearly there ...

Oh god you are definitely YANBU at all.

SophiaPetrillo · 24/10/2014 18:23

They're probably going home because Dad is on weekend leave from Open Prison...for their tea they're going to have lard sandwiches and butterscotch angel delight. The highlight of their lives is when the neighbours watch X Factor and they peer in through the blinds and try to lip read Simon Cowell's comments.

notagainffffffffs · 24/10/2014 18:24

Can you get off whilst whistling 'my way'? Leaving fart for good measure

SophiaPetrillo · 24/10/2014 18:25

Tickle your nose until you feel a big sneeze coming, ensure you evenly distribute the snot over every family member as you depart..
