To be rather cross with MIL thinking I might screw around with DP's brother

I'd like to preface this by saying that I am very fond of MIL. She is, generally, a very nice, kind woman.

However, we have BIL, recently separated from his wife, staying with us at the moment. He's lovely, he and I get on very well, have lots of nice chats and laughs. When MIL found out that BIL was staying with us, the first thing she said was 'I hope he doesn't start fooling around with Shadows '. Like I'd happily shag DP's brother if he initiated something. He wouldn't, and I wouldn't. We are like siblings. Perhaps I'm overreacting, but the fact that the idea of us having an affair rolled off her tongue so easily leads me to believe that she thinks very little of me. Why on earth would she think that I might want to have any kind of dalliance with my fiance's brother? I adore my DP. Why would it enter her head that I might screw around, let alone with his brother

Or maybe she thinks he would. Maybe he has form and that's worried her. It could be her way of warning you. Or maybe it was a daft thing that in hind sight she wishes she never said.
She might not understand a platonic close relationship between sexes as it might not be something she has ever had. She might not be able to understand your friendship and be worried.
Lots of mights. But I expect it was said in error.

I agree with Hey & Carol - this sounds more about your BIL than you and of course being a woman you couldn't possibly say no if he gave you the come on Just put it down to a stupid comment and don't let it fester.

Thanks all. I will let it go, I really am extremely fond of MIL so don't want to argue with her. I honestly didn't think that it might be about BIL, but you all are right, it is probably is. Thanks for giving me some perspective.

My mum is actually quite a nice person she just has some batshit silly ideas about things.

Thanks, some of these replies have made me laugh. Which I really needed, because we have loads of work going on in the house, and I recently lost someone very dear to me, so I could really do without having BIL living with us, never mind MIL suggesting that he and I might (urgh) shag.

He actually looks nothing like DP. DP is about a foot taller, and much more handsome

From the wording in your post it def sounds like she thinks it would be coming from him not you. Just tell MIL you'll set the cat on him if he tries it on

Ha, given the cats response to his presence, I reckon she'd merrily eat his face off without provocation, never mind if he tried to lob one on me. Psycho kitty does come in handy.

Wonder if BIL fooling around is the reason for his separation? Might be Mum in Law's I'll thought out way of expressing that concern, rather than thinking you would leap into bed with him.
