So what are they for??

I've often wondered

CrohnicallyPissedOff · 11/10/2014 21:27

The first 4 are the same as the last 4 of your card number. Presume it's to stop fraud in some way (by making sure that the security code 'belongs' to that card?)

CrohnicallyPissedOff · 11/10/2014 21:27

Security code and signature strip I mean- so you can't peel off one card and attach to another

DoJo · 11/10/2014 21:27

A quick check of my cards reveal that two don't have the other four, and on the two that do, it's the last four digits of the card number itself. Not sure what they're for, but as they aren't universal, I assume not a lot!

Are you with lloyds or tsb, as mine has.

Dh is with Santander and he hasn't.

Often wondered as well.

Extra security for remote card use e.g over phone or on internet. If you have stolen a card number it's useless without this code for the banks that use them. It proves you are in physical possession of the card.

ThermoLobster · 11/10/2014 21:52

I feel sorry for those 4 numbers. No one ever asks for them. Grin

Trills · 11/10/2014 22:11

A mystery!

Poor unloved numbers ( :o Thermo)

sparrowno1 · 11/10/2014 22:13

They are secret numbers. One day you will find them on a hidden box somewhere on a desert island.
Like in Lost.
Hopefully without the Hobbit guy though.

NormaStits · 12/10/2014 05:53

Fluffyears, that's the last three numbers on the security stripy. Op is talking about another set of 4 numbers.

I know my card has some, don't think they are the same as the last 4 digits of my card number because I'd recognise them & I remember wondering too.

Fluffyears · 12/10/2014 14:08

Ah rightBlush the secret numbers,we need to know!!

FlimFlamFloo · 12/10/2014 15:29

my last 3 have rubbed off so my card is very secure!

Only I know them!
