To find this ignorant and snobbish

So I see this post on Facebook by a woman I know of through school. She has a high profile at the kids' school because she's a governor and until recently chaired the PTA. To clarify, she and I are NOT Facebook (or any sort of) friends. I saw it because she has posted on a friend of a friend's timeline.

To give some context, the friend of a friend's status update is grumbling about the increased noise from Heathrow planes flying over our South West London suburb. (I am not getting agitated about the new flight paths personally because my husband and I reason that the planes have got to fly over someone's house). So people are posting supportively and saying 'sign the petition' and so on. Relatively harmless nimbyism so far.

Then the woman in question posts the following:

"I wish they would now fuck off! Too loud tonight! Can they please fly over southhall [sic] as they pay far less council tax!"

I have a few issues with this:

  1. Why single out another suburb?
  2. Council tax is there to provide local amenities and not to protect against potential changes to flight paths so what a stupid thing to say.
  3. I checked the Ealing borough council tax and compared it to my borough (Richmond) and it is pretty much equivalent so what a load of tosh.

This has incensed me and made me wonder should such an unpleasant ignoramus really hold a position of responsibility on the school board?

AIBU?

If I'm honest I think it's a bit of an over reaction to some random if not massively pleasant comment, I've probably said similar stuff and wouldn't expect anyone to take it seriously really!

YANBU, she is clearly a bit of a snob.

However YABU to get so annoyed that you're actually going out of your way to prove to yourself that she's being an idiot. She clearly is, that's obvious to anyone with any normal mindset.
There is precious little chance that you could do to get her removed from the school board on the basis of this comment btw so stop getting worked up.

LadyLuck10 · 03/10/2014 22:22

Get a grip op. Really you are so bothered about something that's nothing to do with you. Confused

rootypig · 03/10/2014 22:24

YANBU, you just didn't need to write five paragraphs to explain it. Yes, twattish thing to say.

blanketyblank100 · 03/10/2014 22:24

hahaha

This is a joke, yes? If not, you're being really, really unreasonable! Go and have a bubblebath and watch the telly.

Topaz25 · 03/10/2014 22:27

Yes, it's an ignorant and snobbish thing to say. No, it's not sufficient to get her removed from the school board.

TrousersSchmowsers · 03/10/2014 22:27

If you're researching content of non-friends' posts on Facebook you need to step waaaaay back! Unclench!

Peniston · 03/10/2014 22:33

Okay thanks. I guess it turns out I was BU. Of course I stumbled across it - not seeking out annoying status updates of people I don't know - that would be truly daft.

I live next to southall, I'll take the planes they might drown out the idiots who can't turn their music down when using the petrol station over the road at night!! I'm pretty sure the planes won't make my windows shake Confused

pearpotter · 03/10/2014 23:42

It sounds like it could be more light hearted than you took it as well. The jibe about council tax is something I would say in jest to make fun of snobs.

mrsminiverscharlady · 03/10/2014 23:49

Sounds like it was tongue in cheek.

WorraLiberty · 03/10/2014 23:53

Sorry but I think it's funny! Grin

I'm quite sure it was meant as a joke.

Bulbasaur · 04/10/2014 01:40

To clarify, she and I are NOT Facebook (or any sort of) friends. I saw it because she has posted on a friend of a friend's timeline.

So basically you were stalking her.

You're reading far too much into a status that she probably only put 2 seconds of thought into.

More over you are going to look massively petty if you bring a facebook status to the council.

Sapat · 04/10/2014 01:53

It was in all likelihood a joke, maybe a reference to a previous conversation. why are you looking at other people's posts and getting irate over what you find? But thanks anyway for reminding me to adjust my privacy settings.

AgaPanthers · 04/10/2014 01:56

Nasty snobbish, racist bitch.

TheXxed · 04/10/2014 02:18

I think it was v v v snobby and quite twatty of her. YANBU!

CrimeaRiver · 04/10/2014 02:25

Blatant, casual racism.

TeracottaTurtle · 04/10/2014 04:03

Racist?

TheEnchantedForest · 04/10/2014 06:44

YANBU -I wouldn't have liked that comment either, it's just lazy and ignorant.

Oh and the op could have easily seen the comment in her newsfeed; no stalking involved!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 04/10/2014 06:48

The planes fly over Wandsworth, which has the cheapest council tax in the country (used to live there). Grin

saadia · 04/10/2014 06:50

YANBU, snide and racist and ignorant.

GoneGirlGone · 04/10/2014 06:53

Pure unadulterated racism and entitlement. Could you mail her and ask if she meant to be so rude?

ithoughtofitfirst · 04/10/2014 07:04

See now she's exactly the kind of person i would worry is on mn and would see this.

longest · 04/10/2014 07:08

How is it racist? Am I missing something?

It's certainly a pretty stupid thing to say, but not worth getting your knickers in a twist about.
