To wonder how you wouldn't notice a coil falling out?

Genuine question.

I have a new mirena coil, and one of the risks stated was that it might fall out without me noticing, so I need to learn to check for it.

Even with my heaviest periods (clots bigger than £2 coins) I'd have noticed something hard and that big, surely?

I didn't actually see it before it went in, mind.

Am I missing something?

hmm, mine never fell out, and I imagine this is a pretty minor risk, but I do remember how easily my Dr removed mine. I was bracing myself and expecting discomfort; it was like removing a tampon.
I shouldn't worry too much OP: once its been there for a short while you'll barely have periods any more, so if it does fall out it wont be 'hidden' in one.
Mirena's are great, by the way!

It is pretty tiny.

If you're having a heavy flow, the coil might just blend in with the sensation of a big clot passing. So you'd feel it, but perhaps not necessarily make the connection that it's the coil falling out instead of just a big clot. Also, not to be gross, but it'd be covered in vaginal mucus, so you wouldn't feel resistance like a dry object.

It's obviously a common enough problem if it's been reported enough to be put on the warnings.

I had a general anesthetic and have been feeling grotty for a week after a day of hellish anxiety, flashbacks and general messing about, so it better had stay put!

I don't think they are talking about it wiggling it's way down into your pants while nothing else is going on. More like going astray while you are having a massive poo and are a bit distracted...

That said, I'm squeamish about doing the whole checking for threads thing, so I just hope for the best. But I can imagine that it's certainly possible for such a tiny thing to go AWOL in certain circumstances without you noticing.

2 manage to disappear on me, had to have a tranvaginal scan to confirm both times.

God knows how I missed it.

It probably will stay put and give you many years of successful family planning. Most women love their coil. I personally got the arm implant because after giving birth, I was so over everyone and their cousin staring down my vagina and messing with it. Grin

How is the arm implant? One side effect listed is acne which is putting me off but am trying to decide and this thread is putting me off the coil!

My Mirena was expelled but I was certainly aware of the occurrence. I won't give details but will say my body gave plenty of signs that it was not happy with that particular coil. I had a different IUD inserted shortly after and got along very well for three years.

Bulbasaur · 23/09/2014 01:11

Every woman is different, blah blah blah...

It hasn't made me break out in acne, except when I get my period (and that happened before the implant). Personally I love it. It was quick and painless to get in. It hasn't affected my weight, it's made my periods lighter, hasn't affected my sex drive.

I will say though, the first couple weeks I was very moody but it went away and I'm back to normal. It also makes me just a tiny bit more irritable the day before my period. But I also have a baby now that deprives me of sleep, so it's hard to call whether it's the implant or a good combination of being tired and PMSing.

If you read reviews on any BC you'll find all the horror stories. The plus side about the coil is that it's a bit less trouble to remove. The implant they have to cut your arm again to fish it out.

HavanaSlife · 23/09/2014 01:33

I lost a coil once, no idea what happened to it. I do sometimes wonder if I pulled it out somehow with a tampon.

idiuntno57 · 23/09/2014 09:01

Discovered mine had come out when I found out I was pregnant.
