Yes, I'm sure that's not how you spell the plural. Daddys long-legs? Confused

It is 3.30, and every half hour since I went to bed one of them has woken me up by drifting up to my face with its horrible zzzzzz noise, then landing just as I wake up.

Bastards.

I was going to say that is a little ott for such a gentle floaty spider but that would be really annoying.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 03:43

Oh, I can't stand them anyway. Don't mind ordinary spiders, but these creep me out. I keep trying to shoo it out or pick it up and nada.

It has lost a leg though. Which is making me cringe.

Why. They so easy to catch. So gentle. Love seeing if they male or female. I think they beautiful.

steff13 · 19/09/2014 03:50

Daddy long legses don't have the general air of wickedness that other spiders have, IMO. We get wolf spiders in our basement this time of year, and they are huge and awful and furry and creepy.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 03:52

rach, d'you fancy coming over here and catching it then?! Wink

I have no idea if it's male or female.

I find them really spooky. The way they drift towards you. It reminds me of daleks - they don't move anything, just advance. And they make a horrible noise.

I'm fine with wolf spiders, though.

I've never heard them make a noise! What noise do they make? "Exterminate?" Tardis

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 04:00
Grin

No.

They make a 'zzzz' sort of noise. I think it's their wings buzzing together.

Have you never heard them fluttering up against a window when they're trapped?

OP posts:
londonrach · 19/09/2014 04:04

The lady of the species has a long straight end so she can lay her eggs in the ground. The gentleman of the species has a short flat end. When you catch them they very gently flutter. You just cradle these delicate animals and gently let them out if the window. However if its a normal spider, ear wig etc im sending a book their way...a heavy one...

steff13 · 19/09/2014 04:04

I don't think I've ever seen one with wings...

I think we might be talking about two different things. I am talking about an insect that is also called a "harvestman," I think you might be talking about something that could also be called a "crane fly."

londonrach · 19/09/2014 04:06

Steff!!! A gentle buzz not exterminate....mind you the ones in your house are very special... They like little angels very gently floating..

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 04:07

Oh, ok! I'm talking about crane flies. I don't know the other thing. Interesting!

rach - oh, trust me, I have tried cradling gently ... and shooing gently ... and shooing less gently.

I can't kill them. I don't kill anything on purpose.

OP posts:
londonrach · 19/09/2014 04:12

Im talking crane too. They have little wings and so gentle....little angels...

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 04:13

You are a strange and odd woman. Wink

(Not really. I am aware this is irrational prejudice. It's just the way they move! It's so fucking creepy!)

OP posts:
jaynebxl · 19/09/2014 04:13

Interesting. What I call daddy long legs is a crane fly apparently and is harmless and soft and gentle. Never realised some people mean something quite different when they say daddy long legs.

londonrach · 19/09/2014 04:15

Me too jayne but always know them as that....

Lally112 · 19/09/2014 04:18

I don't particularly like any of these beasties either but nasty farm cat does, she thinks theyre delicious and I don't actually have to deal with them Grin

steff13 · 19/09/2014 04:18

I never knew what we call daddy long legs were really called harvestmen. They look like tiny brown balls with crazy longs legs.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 04:19

Another reason I need a cat!

I HATE all kinds of spiders! if i cant sleep at night i go downstairs and do an hours sorting/cleaning like dishes or a washload, One night i was downthere at about 3am, Decided to pop some dishes in the dishwasher, the bottom plastic rack (that you put the dishes in) was jammed so i bent down to take a look and BAM a HUGE spider came running toward me, i screamed so loud my boyfriend ran down the stairs and pissed himself laughing when he saw what'd happened, the spider was 4" wide... my sick bastard of a boyfriend measured it before taking it outside... eek. back to the original point, i hate them too so i feel your pain OP.

Random1999 · 19/09/2014 04:28

to the previous poster, I have a dog and 3 cats and it does no good, the dog cowers from them and the cats arent arsed.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 04:32

Eeee! I'm ok with spiders, random, that that would have made me scream too!

And thank you for the sympathy. Smile

I think I'm settled into the election coverage and being awake now, too.

Haha same here! Im pregnant and keep my head out of the toilet tonight:( Gahh, politics it is

JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 04:55

Oh, no!

Poor you, that's rotten. Hope the politics is suitably distracting.

OP posts:
JeanneDeMontbaston · 19/09/2014 04:56

Oh dear - I don't mean rotten that you're pregnant! But the sickness. Stupid small-hours typing. Blush
