To think some job applications are not even considered?

I applied online for a job last week at 2am (problem sleeping) and I got a standard email at 8am to say - thanks but no thanks.

The position had been open for 2 weeks before I applied.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I'm amazing and would get hired on the spot BUT I do get the impression that maybe in the first week of it being advertised they must get so many applicants that if they already have a lot that stand out then they won't even look at your application.

I'm sure that there's a significant number of vacancies on job sites that aren't real jobs.

I've also used to sit beside a manager who had a large team and frequently recruited and got a huge response. She'd sit there with the applications and go no, no, no, no, no. There was probably nothing wrong with most of them but she had to start somewhere.

Not meeting all of the essential criteria, addressing the recruiter as 'Dear Sir/Madam' in the letter/email when you've been given a name in the job advert, spelling mistakes, typos - those are all reasons I use for dismissing applications out of hand, I'm afraid. Harsh but you've got to start somewhere or you'd lose the will to live.
