To wish my neighbour would give up smoking?

My NDN chain smokes in her back garden. We have tiny gardens (city centre courtyards about 18' x 12') with half-height walls so the smoke drifts across to us. If the weather is fine and she is at home she is literally out there every evening and all weekend smoking pretty much non-stop. She must have at least a 40-a-day habit. It has got to the point where we can't sit outside and we can't even have our French doors or a window open as she is smoking so close to our house it drifts inside.

I'm not going to say anything to her, I know she can do what she likes in her own house/garden yadda yadda but I'm asthmatic and cigarette smoke is one of my worst triggers. I never knew it could be so utterly miserable living next door to a chain smoker :(

AIBU - albeit unrealistic - to wish she would have a health-related epiphany and spontaneously give up?

Yanbu to wish she would give up. But i don't think there's anything you can do about it Sad

Can you build up the dividing wall with trellis/plants, to screen her off a little? Can you buy some of those big garden candle things and light them, to perhaps neutralise or cover the smell (although maybe not good for an asthmatic person?).

YANBU. Not in the slightest.
I'm not asthmatic. My neighbour smokes outside too. I've never mentioned it because I know she can smoke outside her back door if she chooses.

I know she is aware it stinks and is bad for her health, but I don't think she realises just how much it stinks! !

I say this because if she realised just how awful it smells, and as a result, how awful she smells, I don't think she'd be quite so eager to point out how terrible the smell of the cannabis smoking coming from the man 3 doors down smells.
I rarely notice the cannabis smell, possibly because it is smoked indoors and the fumes are drifting out of a window. It definitely doesn't smell as rank as her cigarettes.

OTOH, I accept it might just be my sense of smell. Grin
There isn't much that stinks as bad as smoking to me. It really is up there with rotten bins or dog breath or stinky dog shit.
I do a very good pretence of not wrinkling my nose up because it makes me physically recoil when I smell it.
I just smile and retreat indoors as quickly as possible, hoping it hasn't wafted into my home.

If someone let rip and farted a really stinky fart, it's almost acceptable to say 'Phwoarrrr, that's ripe!' Grin but I know this is really unacceptable to smokers but the effects are similar to me. I just think it instead. Grin

What annoys me most about our neighbour smoking outside is that he says he does it to stop his house smelling foul. And yet it's ok for it to make my house smell foul. Drives me round the bend. But I wouldn't say anything either....

I realise this might not work, but could you put reasonably powerful fans on the other side of your garden from your smoking NDN, and/or just inside your french doors/windows facing outwards, so they blow air towards her garden and may reduce the amount of smoke wafting into your garden/house? If she notices and says anything and you're not comfortable explaining that the smoke is causing problems for your asthma, you can just say it's the heat/lack of breeze etc. I sympathise as I cannot stand the smell Sad but don't have asthma so it is only the smell that's the problem. None of my neighbours chain smoke, but it sometimes feels like the NDNs whose garden backs onto ours are psychically attuned to the rare occasions when I'm planning to hang a wash outside and are at the fence smoking! Grrr.
