I have a Gucci watch and one of the link pins has fallen out of the bracelet.

Whilst in Town today I went to Branch of a national chain that solely does watch repairs and asked how much it would cost for a new pin to be fitted.

£49.00 yep 49 bloody quid, the woman very generously suggested that they would do a "full bracelet service" for £69.00 oh and It'd be ready to collect within the hour. She seemed to think they were doing me a favor as sending it back would cost a lot more !!

I went round the corner to a small independent jewelers who did the repair for the princely sum of £1.00 and it only took a couple of minuets.

Now I know large chains are often more expensive, but 69 times more................

That's crazy!! I would've been tempted to return to the chain, waving my receipt around, but I'm fairly petty like that.

iklboo · 12/09/2014 17:08

One high street chain wanted £25 to change a watch battery 'with a lifetime guarantee'. The WATCH didn't cost £25!

GreenPetal94 · 12/09/2014 17:11

Do they see a Gucci watch and produce a special price?

Charitybelle · 12/09/2014 17:16

Yep I have a Radley watch that needed a new strap and they wanted to charge £40 for it! The watch only originally cost £80. Local watchmakers did it for a tenner. Always worth shopping around.

deakymom · 12/09/2014 18:09

photocopy the receipt and anonymously pop it through their letter box?

Good idea.

TBH honest I still can't believe it and keep muttering "69 bloody quid" to myself.

I could have sort have understood paying a lot more for a manufacturers part V's a generic one,but lets face it a small steel pin (which isn't even visible) is,well a still a small steel pin............

The watch lab

It was suggested that I went for the 'full bracelet service' because the rest of the pins were allegedly coming loose. I asked the other jeweler to check them and he assured me it was fine.

I think I paid about £20 ish in debenhams for a replacement battery - they resealed it and pressure tested it too.

YABU for having a shitty Gucci watch in the first place. Get a proper watch.

Lifesalemon · 12/09/2014 21:02

Yeah like a Rado Jubile!
I wish, but I'd settle for a Gucci. At the moment though I couldn't even afford the battery for either Envy

About 15 years ago I went into a hairdresser in the small west country town I lived in, as I wanted about an inch cut off the end of my waist length hair. Booked an appointment and asked how much it was likely to be. £45.

She must have read the look on my face and told me that it was £35 for the trim plus £10 long hair supplement. I must have still looked Shock because she went on to say that they provided London style service at the salon. Which was called '[Man's name] of London'.

Well, as I didn't get London wages anymore I explained that I would not be able to keep the appointment and went round the corner and had it done for £6.

And it was just as good as any hair salon that I had used when I lived in London.

Bulbasaur · 12/09/2014 21:57

When you get branded items, you're paying for the brand, not the quality of the item.

Trickydecision · 12/09/2014 22:59

What's wrong with Gucci watches? My DSs gave me one as a birthday present and I love it. Elegant and discreet. It needed links taken out as it was too loose, and the jeweller told me on no account to lose the pins he had removed (for £20 Shock ) since they would cost a fortune to replace (by him) as the OP discovered.

however · 13/09/2014 05:59

Well, there's nothing particularly wrong with them, but if I want to part with $$$ for a quality watch I think (in my humble opinion) that going to a retailer who specialises in watches is a better investment.
