To not want to be told to 'man up'

To be fair, no-one has actually told me to as yet, but this phrase really makes my skin crawl.

It seems to play up to every stereotype and dusty cliché about what constitutes 'manly' behaviour.

I'll just stay here and quietly finish this slice of quiche if you don't mind....

And I agree. Weird phrase. No one tells angry, muscley, overpowering men to 'man down'.

I read these adverts on Gumtree (usually guinea-pigs for sale) where someone whitters selling because the kids have lost interest or "we have a dog now, kids don't want them^

and I really really want to text them and say "Tell your kids to Man the Fuck Up and take some responsibilty. And Dog. Look out, you'll be next" but I'd probably get arrested.

Well, what alternative would you like people to use?

You can't take a common phrase and then not provide an alternative.

"Put on your big girl panties" is just as demeaning if you think about it.

"Grow up" seemed to cover it when I was a kid...

Grow up is definitely the best option. But this is a great opportunity to use this quote "Why do people say 'grow some balls'? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding."

Grow up doesn't mean the same as man up though.

I really like the video, mamattoo, it hit home.

If truth be known we shouldn't really say "grow a pair" as much as we do on MN because it's just as bad as saying "run like a girl", it does resort to gender insults.

But I will admit to chuckling at grow a pair of ovaries

I have been known to use 'put your big girl pants on'. In my defence I've only ever used it when the recepient has been whining over something ridiculous. It's not something I'd say to anyone actually in the midst of a crisis.

I hate that term. I see it quite a bit within the running circles I mix in e.g. when it's pissing down with rain, or we have a muddy cross country to run.

From my own experience the women and men are equally tough.

Also, as a Mother of two sons I do not want them to think that being a man is about being stronger and tougher than a woman and conversely that women are not tough. I just want them to be strong and tough regardless.

nb. I do acknowledge that men are in general physically stronger than women and I'll get my great 15 year old to do things that I can't do, but that is entirely different. It's a physical thing, NOT a mental thing.

I quite like this phrase I used it quite a bit back in my ACF days.

"Get on with it" - is a phrase I live by.

I say 'Woman up' to dd quite a lot.

That's because women have desirable practical skills.

I told her to woman up last night when picking dog shit up.

A woman I work with uses this phrase around 30 times a day. I am thoroughly sick of it. She's a big, loud bully.
