Al Pacino has ruined my day

DM rang last night and told me she had watched a film starring Al Paseeno -that's how she pronounced his name. DM has done this before, and I told her it's not 'Al Paseeno, it's Al Pachino'. So I told her again last night it's Al fucking Pachino.

DM is all narky with me today because I corrected her speech. Well, I said, when you call him 'Al Paseeno' it makes my teeth itch; which is apparently not good enough defence for correcting her and highly bad manners.

She has other words which I don't correct, keybab is one example.

I ended up apologising!

DM says 'fewndral' for funeral. There's no 'd' in there! Where did that come from?
The worst thing is that any time you'd take about a funeral isn't really a good time to correct someone's speech.

My super intelligent DP pronounces icing (as is icing sugar) as 'icening' and swears he is correct. I can't even cope with discussing it with him any more.

That reminds me, my mother thinks paninis are called pancinos.

As much as I love them I must cut these fools from my life.

My mother says Glastonberry instead of Glastonbury. I love her to bits but for fucks sake she grew up not far from the area, was a child of the seventies and should bloody well pronounce it properly. It drives me irrationally insane that she is convinced that's how it's pronounced.

squoosh a few years ago I went out for lunch with my sister. This was when paninis first started getting popular in the cafés around here. We queued up and got to the counter, and my sister bellows in her overly loud voice 'Ooh I think I'll try one of those punani's.' I was so mortified

My dad says Kay bab too. And mil ay nium for millennium. And hyoomus for houmous. And peter bread for pitta. I don't correct him anymore.

My DP says nucular instead of nuclear and secutary instead of secretary, and parential instead of parental. He is really very clever (engineering geek type), and reads everything and anything. But I really have to bite my tongue when all I want to do is correct him every single time!

Ex-MiL used to say "Nessul" when referring to the company Nestle. Really made me want to punch her in the Al Pacinos...

My friend says critickers instead of cricketers and another who says sumbarines. I take deep breathes (also being Scottish I have had it pointed out that I say film and iron in a way that some would find unacceptable but that is more an accent thing rather than saying them with the wrong letters)

Years ago my mum used to say pitsa (short i) for pizza - though she did eventually stop when corrected!

My MIL is convinced there is a health food shop called Holland & Barnett.

In fairness, Butterfly, everyone thought that was how it was pronounced until they took over Rowntrees in the (IIRC) late 80s. The adverts even used to call them "Nessels Milky Bars".

People who say 'pacific' instead of 'specific' really irk me.

Um, in the actual middle east it's pronounced "peter" bread. "Pitter" is an English affectations I'm afraid.

The Americans and their apparent inabolity to pronounce "nuclear" drives me insane.
