.... vegetarian food like Linda McCartney sausages or Tofu mince are made to look like meat? My mother was on a flight some years ago and was booked to have vegetarian food. She couldn't eat the meal because it was vegetarian sausages.

Why can't she eat vegetarian sausages?

In my case, I LOVED meat, just didn't eat it for ethical reasons. Fake meant was great for me.

DH won't eat veggie food that tastes like meat, which some veggie sausages do. We get the Sainsbo's ones that are kind of sausage shaped but don't contain any kind of 'fake' meat.

We were in a pub once and DH had the veggie lasagne that tasted so like meat even I wasn't sure. He didn't finish it.

There's nowt wrong with meat free sausages.

She couldn't eat the meal because, to her, sausages = meat. Because other vegetables had touched the sausages, she couldn't eat those either.

But meat less sausages are not meat... . I don't think this is a general problem for vegetarians; it really is just her.

I love Linda McCartney sausages. I hated meat, just went right off it as a child but I don't think the fake meats taste like the real thing at all. It's been many moons since I ate real meat but from what I remember they aren't that much alike. They're great for anyone who did love meat but can't eat it for whatever reason be it health or ethical or for those weaning away from meat. But I just like the taste of some. Quorn steaks are yum and I've never even had real steak.

Meat-free sausages, Quorn products and tofu mince are made to look like meat because they're designed to be a vegetarian replacement for meat.We are very meat-centred in our diet in the UK so when people become vegetarian it can often be difficult to know what to cook. These products are designed so that vegetarians can follow a recipe for classic meat-based recipes and just replace the meat with a vegetarian alternative - spaghetti bolognaise, chilli con carne, shephards pie, chicken curry, lasagne etc. Having meat-free sausages, chicken nuggets etc means that people can still do the 'meat and two veg' type dishes or have a full-English with a similar vegetarian protein source.

They are an option for those who want them although vegetarians don't have to ever eat a 'fake meat' vegetarian product. There are plenty of vegetarian products that don't resemble meat at all like bean burgers, nut cutlets, blocks of tofu etc and of course there are tons of vegetarian recipes which don't require any processed products at all. I do understand it when vegetarians want to avoid fake meat products and truthfully I don't really like them that much. I do eat them from time to time though as I find it can be hard to get enough protein as a vegetarian and the fake meat products do help in that regard.

To not eat fake meat sausages or even food that it's touched just because it reminds someone of meat just seems ridiculous to be honest. I don't think most vegetarians would be like that.

I never understood meat substitute veggie foods either....so many fabulous veggie recipes out there without resorting to processed meat impersonation.

Then again I only tried being vegetarian for a year as a cooking experiment, while studying diet and nutrition at university. I considered veggie sausages cheating.
