Just booked a one off clean from a service I found on Google. I'm being charged a 20quid management fee on top of 8 quid an hour! I was a bit stunned and desperate for help so agreed- aibu that's steep? I've got the cash out for the cleaner it's in tens- she should have change, right, and not expect the difference as a tip? It will be 24 quid in all.

Should I tip?!

Do you mean house cleaning?

If so, it sounds incredibly inexpensive - I suppose they have references etc?

NorwaySpruce · 29/08/2014 14:26

I probably wouldn't tip - you are paying a set price for a service.

OwlCapone · 29/08/2014 14:27

In all honesty, I think you should ensure you have the exact money if you don't want to tip.

BucktoothedGirlinLuxembourg · 29/08/2014 14:31

Sounds v reasonable to me and yes, you should have the correct money. £24 in all?

£20 management fee
£8 ph for cleaning

So you're having half an hour of cleaning done? (Management fee + 0.5 hrly rate = £24). What?

NorwaySpruce · 29/08/2014 14:33

I wondered about the half hour cleaning - the poor cleaner will hardly have time to find the Hoover Grin

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 29/08/2014 14:34

Round here it's £15 per hour with a minimum of two hours, so for going through an Agency it's very cheap to me.

I also agree that if you don't want to tip the cleaner you should have the correct money. There's no guarantee they'll carry change.

phantomnamechanger · 29/08/2014 14:35

hopefully thats 3 hours money for the cleaner and not the fee as well?

what exactly is to be done in the time?

Nancy66 · 29/08/2014 14:37

I would tip but up to you

CromerSutra · 29/08/2014 14:40

I don't quite understand what you've paid for and what you're getting. £8 an hour isn't a lot. As for the fee....what does that cover?!

sillystring · 29/08/2014 14:45

Your post doesn't make much sense. Do you mean £24 for 3 hours cleaning PLUS a £20 management fee, making a total of £44?

trikken · 29/08/2014 14:50

Its got to be at least 28 pounds surely, or have you paid the 20 pounds already?

Viviennemary · 29/08/2014 14:51

I think you'll have to give some more details. Do you mean a one off clean and for only half an hour. That can't be right. But agencies usually charge more than £8 an hour for cleaning. I don't think I'd tip a cleaner.

heraldgerald · 29/08/2014 14:52

I know 8 quid isn't alot I feel bad for the girl, it's a 3 hour clean, I was shocked at the 20quid management fee. Agree about right change. How much to tip then? She had a 15 minute sit down when she arrived, fair enough, is that included in the time?

OP posts:
heraldgerald · 29/08/2014 14:52

Sorry peeps to be unclear- 20 quid is separate balance transfer

OP posts:
OcadoSubstitutedMyHummus · 29/08/2014 14:54

8 PH is cheap for one off cleaning. I don't think a 20 fee to arrange someone is particularly steep. I've just checked back as I got a one off clean for 4 hours recently and that was 53 inc VAT.

I wouldn't expect her to have change TBH.

Georgina1975 · 29/08/2014 14:55

I think it is quite reasonable to be honest if it's 3 x £8ph (£24) and £20 management fee.

One-off cleans and generally more expensive than a regular service.

We pay £31 PCM management fee and £8ph for 3 hours per week. The hourly rate goes straight to our cleaner - we usually leave £25 (£1 tip - woophie).

phantomnamechanger · 29/08/2014 14:56

She had a 15 minute sit down when she arrived, fair enough, is that included in the time?

NO! not if she is being paid to CLEAN for 3 hours, rather than just be in your house for 3 hours

I guess if you were instructing her rather than just making smalltalk about the weather and GBBO, then it was "working time"

OcadoSubstitutedMyHummus · 29/08/2014 14:56

I wouldn't expect sitting down time to count, no. See how she does and if she works hard and does a good job personally I'd just give her the 30 to keep.

CromerSutra · 29/08/2014 14:57

In that case no, I don't think that's too much and I do think you'd need exact change.

CromerSutra · 29/08/2014 14:57

I wouldn't tip.

Georgina1975 · 29/08/2014 14:58

I would just give her the £30 if you only have tens - wouldn't expect her to carry change at all.

But then I would also expect 3 hrs cleaning time too. Not 2hrs 45mins.

heraldgerald · 29/08/2014 15:01

Right thanks so much everyone. Iwbu!
