Ds's friend is allergic to all fruit?

Really? I've offered them strawberries. If he's really allergic, I'll offer something else (have already offered alternative fruit). Uf it's just that he doesn't fancy what's on offer he can go without!

Yes really. My nephew is the same. It's something inside the fruit...I can't remember what it's called though.

There is such a thing as oral allergy syndrome, when people with pollen allergies get cross reactions to a vast array of fruit/vegetables. They get tingling mouths and their lips and tongues can swell. Quite unpleasant.

But it is more likely he's trying it on in the hope of a biscuit so i would just say 'what a shame' and offer him a drink of water

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. Far better to have the wool pulled over your eyes than a child with an allergic reaction.

It is possible. Either offer him something else or don't. Whether he is truly allergic or not if you give him fruit he won't eat it either way.
But I would never risk forcing the issue in case he really is allergic.

It's the natural sugar found in fruit, and it's entirely possible.

I wouldn't be inclined to chance it, because if you're wrong, and he really is, it could be quite serious.

Yes, I know someone who was allergic to the fructose in fruit and spent a very long childhood ill in hospital because of it.

Are you serious here? Why would you insist a 14 year old boy with an assumed allergy eat fruit on your say so? What is there to gain?

I'm not going to try and make him eat it!! I'm just reluctant to get the biscuits out because (younger)e ds2 is terrible at meal times if he's had anything other than a small fruit snack. I can't offer one and not the rest of them, can I?

But why would you have to get the biscuits out? Just say 'that's a shame' and move on - he won't die without a snack!

I have the tree pollen thing. I can't eat oranges, and can have a reaction to any tree fruit, although it is worse with ripe tree fruit.

He doesn't need a snack. Or offer a piece of bread.

That's what I have done Dojo. It just didnt feel quite right. if it was a friend of mine Id try to find something they could have, to be a good host. I find the extqutte if hosting almost adults quite tricky!

My mum is allergic to citric acid. All fruit including tomatoes. A squeeze of lemon juice would cause a massive reaction.

Why are SO Many people so put out by people having allergies? Ok, so some try it on, but it doesn't make it any less real or serious or problematic for those that do suffer.

It was probably mentioned in a don't worry about x because he can't eat fruit to try and not put you out. Not because the person who told you wanted you to provide something else. Like a pp said, it's only a snack.

Check with the parent. In my experience it is very common for young people to say they are allergic to something, when actually they just don't like it.

My friend's son was allergic to salicylic acid which is found in all fruits.

My cousin is allergic to all fruits and vegetables with seeds inside. He can have peas, corn, onions, beans etc but not apples, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumber and the like. It's really odd, and really tricky for him because a) nobody believes it and thinks he's just fussy and a PITA and b) he can't really eat out anywhere new because cucumber, tomato, peppers and things are hard to avoid.

I'm the same and only discovered it in my twenties after routine allergy testing following an anaphylactic shock to nuts (hence the nickname)

I've never liked fruits so never ate them as long as I can remember .... Give me veg any day!

I know someone who is allergice to chlorophyll (is that the right-the green stuff in leaves etc) so can't have any green veg. he also can't mow the lawn apparently.

I'm allergic to a lot of fruits, but only when eaten raw. It's oral allergy syndrome as someone mentioned above and is related to hayfever. Interestingly, cooked fruits don't have the same effect, so I can eat a baked apple for example, but not one straight off the tree.
