To spend £60 on my 18 months old winter coat from Polarn o' Pyret?

We can afford it, but not so financially comfortable that spending sixty pounds on a coat for a toddler is not something that does make me gulp.

Personally I wouldn't dream of spending that much on an item of clothing that will most Likely last just a few months.

What I would do is look in the sales when they come around and buy a big one for next season. That's how I tend to get most coats and a lot of clothes.

The problem with buying a big one is that if it is too big, it doesn't do the job. I see children swamped in winter costs that are going to be fantastic in a year or two, but for the winter in which they are actually in.... Crap because simply too big.

When I said buy a big one I meant in the sales after this winter by a 2-3 one which will fit next winter (or whatever you think you will need) as they get older it gets a bit easier to try to plan ahead!

DS is going to be wearing a winter coat this winter which has been sat in his cupboard a couple of years as I got it for £15 instead of £60

Yes don't worry if you really like/want it. It's not necessarily massively justified, but in the old days (i.e. before kids!) I'd buy a dress for myself for £60 and maybe only wear it a few times, so it's no different to that.

Sorry but I think it's madness... They grow so quickly that it might not even last this winter...

ps Everything I've bought for my DD that cost over the odds has lasted. And then you can also force the next child to wear it! You might have to have another DC, OP, to financially justify it

I don't understand "madness" when my dd will be in the coat for at least a few hours every singe day, from November to March.

£60 on a coat for a toddler is crazy. Don't care if its made of solid gold, its still a waste of money for such a young child. You want clothes you don't care about at that age, not something you need to keep pristine so you can sell it on.

POP stuff lasts for ages. DS at 3 and a half is still wearing a 2-3 coat that he's had since he was 18 months. It washes well and items have cuffs that are designed to turn up when too big and down as the child grows. Do it!

Why is it a waste if knew on such a young child? When she will be spends the same amount of time twice as her older brother.

Every winter coat I buy for my children lasts one year. Do you manage to get two years out of yours vest? If not, I don't see your point about dd being so young to not warrant an expensive winter coat.

I bought the outer shell jacket from p o p when he was 18 months one size up and the fleece which was enough for London winters (and the mud trousers as well). He wore those for two winters (and the outer shell alone in autumn and spring) and now dc2 is on it. So I got good value out of it.

Gap winter coats for babies/kids are VERY warm, lined, hooded, elasticated wrists and about £30. Ican well afford £60 but wouldn't on principle. It lasts 1 winter and gets covered in crap. Sometimes literally.

The other thing is would you be happy for her to jump in muddy puddles wearing it? Or to roll down a big hill? It's all well and good children having lovely expensive clothes but some parents then restrict their activity in order to keep it good.

I would, if after buying it you still have enough money to pay the bills and put food on the table then go for it.

I'd also sell it on afterwards and make sure I looked in the sale to see if I could pick up something I liked in a larger size for next winter.

Last year I found a lovely navy winter coat for my ds now aged 2 on ebay for £4. It was originally from sainsburys and was warm and waterproof and lasted him all winter.

You don't need to spend £60 on a coat. Not at all..but if you want to that's a different matter.

Pinksun, I sized up, but that goes to 2/3 and she's not quite 18 months. It was huge on her. Didn't you find that?

I had one from Polarn for my 1st child. It was amazing.

If it is the one with a fleece, it really is three coats in one. She lived in the fleece pretty much 3 seasons of the year, then you can use the coat without fleece in late autumn and early spring, fantastic rain coat, and both together as a super warm coat. It is really waterproof, and we used to spend hours out in the winter in parks. My kids were always much warmer than their friends in cheap coats.

We bought size 92 for an 18 month old, it was big and was good enough til three years old. It is now on it's second child and could easily go on to another. The wash brilliantly. I can't rate them enough, they seriously allow you to spend winter outside.

I love it so much I am buying another.

I would say the whole point of getting one of these coats is that you are very happy for them to be covered in mud etc.... I bought the waterproof trousers as well, my son spends hours in the woods jumping in and out of muddy puddles in the rain and cold - he LOVES it and I get some thinking time.

Last winter I bought DD a snow suit in the next size up. She didn't get much use out of it because the weather was quite mild and because it was too big she looked really uncomfortable wearing it in the buggy.
However it does still fit , so no big disaster!

Just get it if you want/ can afford it OP, life's too short. I don't think £60 is an excessive amount to spread on a coat personally. Just pass it on or sell when she out grows it.
